The price wasn\'t cheap, the property was run down and the facilities were all very dated..pity. The two ladies running the place seemed a little \'what choice have you got?\' in their attitude, again a pity. Lastly location was a stones throw from the ferry but conversely the place backed onto the railway lines (spitting distance) and so sleep was problematic.

Hostel itself isn't bad, perfect location (walking distance from ferry terminal). One thing really bothered me: you don't get a key for your room (at least, for the dorms), In other words, you can't lock the doors. Of course, New Zealand is a safe country but it just gives an uncomfortable feeling when you can't lock the door when you leave for a walk or go to sleep..

When I arrived at the Picton Lodge, I felt like I was visiting a grandparent\'s house not the awesome kind, but one who tries to feed you 20-yr-old sweets and doesn\'t understand why you\'re not interested in their collection of doilies. It\'s dated. The lady-owner was considerate, but not particularly with it. There were no locks for the dorm-rooms and the only lockers cost 2$ every time you wanted to re-close them. If you need a place to sleep it does the trick, but not with any particular flair.

Too many beds crammed into one room, no place to set packs. No key to lock door, anyone could come into hostel at any time of day or night. Cleanliness was definitely lacking in most areas. Dog was allowed to run free throughout hostel.

At first glance this hostel does not look very modern and doesn't have the newest facilities, it's a little tatty round the edges. But it is a nice place to stay. It's very easy to find from the ferry and the kitchen and lounge are quite sociable and have everything you need. The shower rooms are a bit small and I imagine they would get chilly in winter. Also there was no key for the room so anyone could walk in and out, but it's a small hostel so that probably not a problem.

This place has so much more potential. The things i noted: 1.Isobel and her sister (?) were extremely nice and worked very hard 2. There are rules posted everywhere (in over 40 languages to wash up the dishes) 3. There seems to be a array of male relative living in the place (staying in the dorm), who spend all day drinking and gives the place a feel of a homeless shelter Kick out the men and have some youthful vitality introduced to this place and it could fulfull its potential

I have never seen such disgusting carpet in my life. Throughout the entire building it was so old and grotty looking. Then in the bedrooms, it was so stained and grotty. All in all it was a very traumatic experience.

Clean and comfy and good location, staff a little odd and slightly smelt like an old people's home, not much atmosphere but good as a base.

Manager is sometimes very helpfull at other times NOT! A 10-15 min. walk from the ferry terminal but they do have a service where they provide a drop off 4 times a day. Big plus for the free spa.
