Staff were very unfriendly, we didn't few welcome in the communal area once. They say they offer a free pick up service which was asked for but when we got back to the hostel they charged us for it. Also no "free welcome tea". Honestly felt we were being ripped off by asking them to book us taxis and trips because they just used their family to give lifts not real taxis so you couldn't bargain. Would not stay here again and would not recommend it.
We arranged a free pick up service from the train station and had an answer straight away saying it was sorted. At 12am we were disappointed to find no pick up and forked out for an expensive taxi. When we arrived everything was locked up and had to bang on the door to wake up the owner and be greeted with a very very rude owner. The room was decorated lovely but had a very bad smell from the bathroom. When we left the owner tried to make us pay more for an upgrade we hadn't asked for!!!
We enjoyed our stay here. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfasts good. The location is great. The kang beds are super comfy! Only thing is that our bathroom - we were in an ensuite- smelt of rotten eggs from time to time. Ok if door kept shut. Also shower not v powerful and better to use at night for hot shower as solar heated.
Don't trust the Lonely Planet's description about this place, the staff is NOT great or speak good english except the younger guy. Even if you book advance, you never know what you'll get. Our double room was mouldy and no hot shower available. The AC smelled so bad if you turned it on that we couldn't use it. The owner (older man speaking english) was at first nice, but when he realized we weren't interested on the tours he tried to sell us, he wasn't anymore interested in any customer service.
I wish I could write something positive as the place was actually nice. However, I cannot recommend this place. We did not get to stay at the place we booked but we were transfered to another place a little longer outside right from the train station. We were never asked if that was okay even though it was as it had nice rooms. They did not accept the deposit we payed on hostelworld and only got it back after arguing. Also, they tend to overcharge if you don't do the maths yourself.
Smashing place! Absolutely beautiful hostel, very traditional old building. Rooms are clean, bathrooms and showers great! Owner speaks really good English. Location is nina nice spot within city walls. There are lots of trips available to book. Can't go wrong with this hostel.
There is also a hotel owned by the same people. We made a reservation to the guesthouse but the person who picked us up brought us to the hotel. The owner said we could stay there and used our confusion and got us pay 10 yan per person too much per night. We also paid the whole price even if we had paid the deposit fee in advance. The free pick up service doesn't include PingYaoGuCheng station. There also wasn't any free tea or beer at the time of arrival. And there wasn't lockers.
good hostel, well renovated Ming style, good location but the lounge-dining is cold and does bring the travellers together. That is for the new hostel. Better for the old one but need a good revamp in the rooms and everywhere. Still both good hostels
Doesn't really feel like a backpacker place. However, nice place to spent one or two nights. The rooms are simple and in max for two person including a simple bathroom. If you arrive by bullet train take the bus to get to the station in the city.
The rooms are great! The only problem we found is the smell like "naphthalene" in some areas of the bed. It is a strong chemical smell and sometimes uncomfortable. The tour to Mianshan should be presented more like a drive since once there you are left by yourself. We enjoyed your food and hospitality, thanks for finding out train tickets!
Great location and good value for money. Staff is not really the nicest, looks like they only care about making money, they asked me 5 times if I wanted to book a tour and ignored my email about the train station pick-up (which I had to pay).
English speaking staff, but they were not always so nice when we needed help. Booked the tour to wang courtyard and the underground castle with "mr dong" (recommended in lonely planet) but actually it was not with mr dong and there was no guide, just a driver who didnt speak english, so it was a bit disappointing. The hostel is in a good location, its beautiful and overall the value for money is good.
The owners of that hostel are fake! Dont trust them at all. They are not willing to help you, especially the women. They dont speak English. I had a different room than the one I had booked and payed more. The only exception was Mr Deng, he was able to speak English. Dont go to Mianshan....not natural, pure artificial and touristic....little Disneyland for Chinese children. Enjouy Pingyao for not more than 2 days.
If not for the dirty bathrooms and old facilities, I would say it's a good hostel.
Very beautiful traditional building, especially at night, not too far from the main area. Everything would be great if the staff/owners would have been less interested in making money and take more care of the guests. We asked to change to dormitory and after been asured everything was ok we come back later at night to discover they gave away the room and that we had to search for another place at night during busy season, all of this without even a "sorry"!

Nice hostel, central location, really beautiful courtyard! I stayed in a dorm room (which was 6 beds, instead of the 4 bed I booked) which was very clean and had a very nice bathroom. Staff were helpful in arranging things like trips and train station pickups.
Not sure I can really recommend this place. The traditional house is fantastic but there are at least 25 similar places in walking distance. The hostel was quite loud, poor shower facilities and overpriced breakfast. There wasnt much if a hostel atmosphere either. Communication with the place was bad and slow which resulted in us not gettibg picked up from the high speed train station. I recommend to shop around in town instead. There are olenty if guest houses.
Fantastic location, neat little courtyard right outside your room, good food, and very friendly staff (plus a beautiful golden retriever). WiFi is weak in rooms, otherwise, no complaints.
When we arrived all available beds in the dorm were dirty, it seems that they had not been cleaned properly. The dorm is very small, and there is only one bathroom with toilet for several dorms together. The location is great, but extra services such as food, drinks or laundry were quite overpriced.
The property is beautiful and in a good location, right in the ancient city. Other than that, this was honestly one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a hostel, and I'm saying this as someone who has backpacked through China 4 separate times. Be warned that they DO NOT honor online bookings, and that the couple who runs the place is rude, aggressive, and dishonest. Even the "free" pickup service is a scam, they tried to charge 30¥ a person after the fact. Try Yamen Hostel instead.
