This was without a doubt the most disgusting hostel I've encountered in South America. Prime real estate, but we walked in and walked right back out to look for another place to stay. There was LITERALLY nothing else available (Easter weekend) for 2 nights, so we toughed it out until we could switch (had to pay for 3 nights but couldn't bear it). Fun bits included waking up with hives, bathrooms that haven't been cleaned in months. I'd go ANYWHERE else. Never again.

This was without a doubt the grossest place I've ever laid eyes on. Walking into this place felt like walking into a crack den. There were people lounging everywhere, on the floor, in hammocks, in tents. And trash- everywhere! We were led upstairs to our 24 person room, and the metal on the stairs was corroded and so we felt as if they were going to break at any second. We were completely astonished, but tried to stick it out for one night. We left after 4 hours- we were bitten by bedbugs.

I don´t even remember this guest, but it sounds like they were not Piratas material.

Possibly the worst hostel i have stayed in.. We all thought it was gross bit it's cheap.. The staff are really nice and easy going apart from the owners wife.. She was seriously cold and snarly.. As much as we hated the facilities we didn't want to leave.. Had soooo much fun there! Also the pool is empty! Def worth sticking it out for the fun we had there!

Absolutely the most disgusting place I've ever checked into. Thank god this place is closing down. Due to demand during the carnival, we were left with no choice but to stay here. Staff were good but the conditions is like a refugee camp.

Hostel was in great location and staff were really friendly, how ever its seemed it was just one big doss house as in mattresses would appear all over the floors just so they could fit more people into the hostel, the shower facilities were poor as in not much water power had many showers where the water was barely dripping out out. The bed i was given you could see that other people had slept on it as the sheets were dirty and i got covered in bed bugs. good atmosphere at hostel tho :)

Piratas is a kwerky hostel, its got an edge to it that some will like. What its not is clean or modern. Its overcrowded, dirty and hot, but its got a hippy / adventurous vibe. Check it out in person before booking - not for everyone

Perfect loaction, not too noisy, nice staff, good price. Very simple, but all I needed. Main thing missing was electrical outlet close to my bed to charge mobile phone.

Don't go! The owner is going to sell the place and has no interest in running a good business anymore! Don't go there!

this hostel is a place where down to earth people come and just relax... cleanliness is not the pritority, but for everybody to get to know each other and get into the comfort zone... the location is perfect! its near everything, especially the top two beaches here! the staffs here are champ! they will help you with anything. if you are a backpacker who just likes to have fun and meet people, then this is the hostel for you!

It can get really crowded if full, and the communal areas aren't that big. Cleanliness isn't as bad as other reviews made out - it's more like a squat. It is absolutely the best option is Rio in terms of value for money. We stayed at other places and they were three times as much but only slightly better.

location of the hostel was good between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the staff were friendly and helpfull. However at even a cheap price you expect some basic hygiene included. The bathrooms were terrible, only 1 shower and 1 wash basin worked in the male toilets, the floor was constantly covered in urine and broken glass. The main areas were dirty, full of insects, the beds were uncomfortable and covered in squeaky plastic coverings. Internet available, however staff played games all day.
