Great chatty staff and cheap wifi. Had a lovely welcoming atmosphere and a free breakfast. We moved from a hostel in the center of Christchurch to Point Break Backpackers in New Brighton and found it a much better area with loads more going on than in the center as a result of the earthquake.

Kitchen was a mess, very uncomfortable to eat in. Room was ok, staff were ok. Very disappointing stay overall, we will not stay here again.

The area around the hostel does not seem to be safed. Public transport especially in the early mornings and on public holiday is rarly. Staff is not very welcoming.

The hostel is strategically located. Most of the basic daily needs are easily accessible. You can conveniently obtain your favorite fresh produce here. Most importantly, you could receive good internet signal which would enable you to comfortably surf internet. The staffs were helpful too. Overall, it is a good hostel for backpackers.

marketed as "right on the beach", actually a few blocks away, it was an ok hostel, some of the staff was friendly and helpful and some were not very friendly.

They don't take credit cards. It's not that clean, especially the bathrooms. I woke up and my eyes were swollen from the dirt in the room. I tried to buy 200 MB of internet like it says you can on the writing on the wall. But for the same price, I only got 40 MB because I was checking-out. Free breakfast is only on week days. It's far from everything. I wouldn't book there again.

Very basic, low value for money, felt a bit like handling cattle. I have seen much better hostels for the same money, sorry.

I stayed in the 8-bed dorm next to the kitchen. They put a 9th person on an inflatable mattress on the floor, so the room was extremely crowded. If you want to sleep, request a different room, as the heavy fire door that is just outside the dorm slams every 15 seconds until 4AM. It sounds like a WWE match in the hall-extremely noisy! Cleaning and dishwashing is done by guests, so it was pretty gross most of the time. No lockers provided. Close to beach and free WIFI at the library.

A nice hostel just a few minutes from the beach and shopping. Good cheap food on a nearby street; take a left out the entrance and then another. Since the CBD is still closed, the sights of Christchurch lie mainly in the suburbs and New Brighton is definitely worth a visit. The owner will also make food if she is not working alone, also at a good price. It's a pretty accessible hostel by bus, but it takes about half an hour to get out there via one. No windows in my dorm room, and no lockers.

Remember, Christchurch is completely destroyed. So there are like 2 hostels in the whole damn town. It’s expensive to get here from the airport ($80 cab, $50 shuttle). That being said, this was a nice hostel. There was a big kitchen, a nice pool table, a tV room, and the rooms were clean. The beach in the area was nice too.

Not much in the area as far as shopping and food, but the beach is gorgeous and very close. There are nice stretches of road and trails nearby to go for a job or bike ride. The building itself is nice and the people are friendly and helpful.

I had a great stay, the place was easy to find, the staff very friendly and helpful and the dorm was great. The only thing that could have been an improvement is having the pool room, tv room and kitchen in one big open space to make it a bit easier to all socialise together.

Rooms were clean but very bare. A lot of noise from outside until late at night. Also, kitchen was full of beer drinkers and difficult to use.

This hostel was ok. Bathroom and kitchen were good and clean, but the dorm room had no windows and was not as nice. There were lockers for use in the hallway and cheap internet :p The biggest problem is that it was very far from the city centre/train/coach station - you have to get 2 local buses and it takes at least 30 mins to get to this hostel in New Brighton. However, it has a good location within New Brighton, close to the beach and supermarket.
