My stay here was excellent. there was a space in the back for my bicycle. The people I met there were very friendly. they have a lovely lounge, and an excellent, very large kitchen to make meals with a good system for keeping track of each person's food.

My name is Jacques. I was very happy to stay 5 days at Portsmouth & Southsea Backpackers Lodge. I had a warm welcome from the staff. I hope I will choose again Southsea Backpackers and Regards to Pedro at the reception a very nice guy. Cheers Jacques

I already had a better experience for same or cheaper price. Bathroom very poor.

The worst hostel we've been to in years and even bad by UK low standards: no hot water in showers, kitchen locked overnight, needs lots of repairs that just haven't been done....on the whole just grim and grimy, but the beds and bathrooms were clean, despite the mold.

This has become a resident hotel for people who can\'t afford to live anywhere else in Portsmouth. On the dorm bunkbeds, the lower and upper bunks are so close an adult cannot sit up in bed. The hostel admits guests up to 11 p.m., so dorm residents may be awakened up to midnight. When I tried to use the shower in the dorm room, the shower head fell off, the curtain and rod fell down, and the temperature gauge wasn\'t actually connected to anything. Big, big mistake! Slum hotel, not a hostel.

Managers, Daniella and Pedro, were welcoming and helpful. Hotel is run-down and not well-maintained. Showers were moldy and valves didn't work (cold or scalding). Mattresses were worn out and uncomfortable. First room had a box spring instead of a mattress. Kitchen is well-equipped.

This hostel is probably the only one in Porthsmouth, and that is why apparently the staff doesn't give a damn about customer satisfaction. The facilities are OK, although not very clean, but reception is open from time to time and we were very disappointed with the treatment from staff, who were not helpful at all and were even rude. The day we checked out we left our luggage for storage and in the evening when we came back to take it, we found it thrown out by staff on the common stairs :(

The Portsmouth hostel was terrible. The 'ensuite' was filthy, no loo paper as the light didn't work. The staff there were Very relaxed. South sea was a huge improvement. Friendly staff, clean facilities and info on hove/Brighton.

The heatinf wasn't on when we were there so it's absolutely cold. We thought there were ticks in the bed or the linen hasn't been cleaned properly. Definitely its going to be our first and last stay there.

This hostel was in a great central location, v. close to the sea. It was quiet at night and the staff were helpful. My only negative comment were the state of the bathrooms, many of which didn't seem to work v.well. Having said that though, this is not a reason not to stay, just a point for improvement.

For me, average character is as good as good. However, 2/3 mornings 1 bathroom dirty, the other neither hot nor cold water for shower. Door of 1 WC could not be closed. Water discharge of hand washbasin in room very slow. One staff (female) extremely helpful, the other (male) average. Facilities: Seemed o.k. Did not use common area (kitchen, living room, etc.)). Internet slow, many interruptions. Because of above, value for money poor.

It's a good 30 min walk from the train station. It is a place to stay for a night, nothing more. Wifi worked, but my stay was spoiled by bad room mates (playing loud music while they slept at 1am) and poor staff. I realize little can be done with the room mates. When I was looking to check out and leave my bag in the baggage locker, the sign said it was open from 9am. I started waiting around 8:50 but he didn't show up until 9:22 and didn't apologize for it. Then he just left my bag in the hall

Shower was quite dirty and the whole building had a strange musty odour. Staff answered questions but were not too helpful or friendly. It was fine for one night but would not stay more than that. Probably a better bet paying a bit more and staying in a nice B&B.

It's very cheap, so you can't expect too much, but one shower per floor isn't enough! We were 8 in our dorm, and there were other rooms, too, so one shower between.... 15? Pah! Staff were friendly enough, but a bit lazy and not very helpful. Not knowing where to find the tourist information office is just pathetic! (FYI, you go left out of the door, walk about 20m to the sea, turn right, go 200m and it's inside the war museum...). Good location, though.

Unfortunately there are not too many hostels to choose from in Portsmouth. This hostel was ok but didn't lend itself to a friendly atmosphere. The shower/toilet in the room was quite unclean. Otherwise just an average hostel.

It was a nice place, but could use some coffee or continental breakfast (cereal + fruit). I'd pay an extra 2-3 pounds a night for that... especially since it's one of the only places in Southsea with wifi.

The rooms need regular claening and some refurbishment. Boasting of WI-FI that does not work or is slow like a sa=nail is a disservice to customers who are attrcted to the facility base on such premises. The lady staff is unfriendly. Even my cost for the nights I decided to move out was slashed.

The place is basically falling apart but I's still recommend it. A lot of character (well a 'Good' amount according to my rating above). The place is populated by the usual assortment of burnt out hippies eager to chat, and the fresh scent of certain ... ahem... herbs being smoked wafts through the corridors. 5 star it aint but you still get a decent bed to lie your head down on. They have a lovely dog that potters around the place too.
