Great staff, location and overal atmosphere!! If you want a nice quite weekend as a couple this is the place to stay, just in between the old and new part of Istanbul. Very helpful staff, they went the extra mile to ensure we had a great stay and thanks Martha for dinner suggestions! We had a room with shared bathroom, but although there were more guests at our hallway, it was like we had our own private facilities:)

This hostel is great. The staff is very nice, helpful and friendly. They make you feel like home. Next to the hostel is a supermarket, which is opened 7days a week til 9pm. the rooms are very private. Me and my boyfreind just shared a corridor that had a seperate shower and restroom, with an other couple. The only negative point is that the shower water is not hot, only lukewarm. But in summer you can live with that. I really recommend that hostel.

Lovely, clean, stylishly decorated boutique hostel in up & coming Karaköy neighborhood, away from tourist traps of the old town, yet near a tram stop for easy access to main sights, walking distance to Galata, steps from ferry terminal and Istanbul Modern, next door to the best Simit bakery in town and several cafes. Friendly manager Cidgem makes you feel welcome right away, spends time with you offering suggestions, and even offers tips on proper hamam etiquette. Feels more like a guesthouse

Very nice hostel, everything is new and clean and breakfast was very good. English fluency of the staff varies greatly, but overall its okay. Location is fine, as of the distance to the center, but try to arrive before it gets dark, because you will be able to find the hostel better and the neighborhood will seem less scary :)

Yes, we made the right choice by choosing this place. We were looking for a decent place to stay that is still within our budget yet clean and has a central location yet quit. Bingo! After reading so many good comments, we can only recommend it to everybody. Our room was like described, the mattress was comfortable, the cleaning lady immaculately detailed and friendly, breakfast good & varying and the location just perfect. In fact the whole staff was friendly and competent. Would book again.

The hostel is situated really close to Galata Bridge in a quiet street. This is definitely not a place for party lovers and loud crowds, it's more like visiting your relatives abroad. You can grab a guidebook or a magazine in the hall, then enjoy a cup of apple tea in the kitchen, then buy fresh fruit at the supermarket across the street. Sweet home-like place and the staff was friendly too. Cleaning lady came every day.

Great central location if you want to explore the old and the "new" part of the city. The ferry to the Asian side is also a 2 min walk away. The double bed room was large and clean and the bed comfortable. The staff was helpful. There's a supermarket, the best baklava, the coolest restaurant in town (Maya) and more delicious food less than a 1 min walk away. We didn't use the kitchen except to make tea, but it's well furnished. It's really quiet, actually more a "friendly hotel" than a "hotel".

Portus was a terrific hostel. My daughter suggested we stay at a hostel (she is on a long budget conscious trip) and I was sceptical I would be comfortable. It turned out to be the perfect place to start our stay in Istanbul. Great location, very comfortable prvt room on quiet street. Great value. We shared a very clean bathroom with one other prvt room. Cigdem, our hostess, speaks perfect English, gave us great info to all our questions. Suggested the best non touristy restaurant. Will return.

We had the double en-suite and it was lovely. Portus pays attention to the details -- a free sample of Turkish candy and nut butter, house slippers, a book to read, really good smelling local shampoo and conditioner. The room was clean and cozy and incredibly affordable (compared to how much the same thing would cost in Canada a tleast). The best part was in the morning, when we got our own private chef for breakfast. 5 thumbs up. The only problem was the bathroom fixtures kept falling off.
