A little out of the way, but a nice hostel. Beds were surprisingly comfy. Staff was helpful and very nice.

The guy at reception seemed stoned when we arrived, so first impression was bad. All Germans when we were there, so not a social place if you're not. Most people seemed to be there for weeks so feels like you're at someone else's party. Our beds in the dorm where terrible, there was no proper bottom in the bed, just some kind of nettjing. So it was like sleeping in a hammock. Hostel itself is like a shed, so very cold at night. Location is beautiful, but impossible without a car.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Stunning scenery, helpful, generous staff and activities available through their adventure centre. This is not a place to stay if you want to party or be at the centre of a lively nightlife. Being up a mountain, there is not a constant power supply and getting in to the town of Akaroa can be hard work (for me, at least) if you do not have a vehicle. BUT...the clue is in the name. 'RETREAT'. Go there, have a look around, ask questions. No excuse to complain.

My favourite hostel so far - this is what im came to New Zealand for! Friendly staff picked me up from Akaroa town and took me to another world - this hostel has stunning ocean views across the Hinewe reserve. I should have stayed 1 night but stayed 3, enjoying the amazing walking and horse riding from the hostel, and relaxed atmosphere, BBQs and sunsets from the garden - thank you purple peak team for a great stay :)
