This is a hotel, not a hostel, and therefore completely lacking any soul. True it was in a hutong so theoretically it's more authentic (peeling wallpaper and mosquito corpses on the walls and ceiling) but prices were hiked for Golden Week while service obviously wasn't. There was a 'bar/restaurant' which wasn't operating.as far as I could tell. It's not operated with foreign visitors in mind. It was a truly unmemorable experience, though the shower was nice.
Roach in bathroom, fly's, sewage smell in room at various times of day. TV broken. Bed was hard, even in comparison to normal China standards. Smell was unbearable on last day.
Staff was great, room was a great value, however it was difficult finding a taxi driver that knew the exact location - even after we had a local write the address in Chinese. There are a couple of Shijia Hutongs in Beijing and getting to the hostel from PEK by cab was more difficult than it should have been. Maybe if there was a map that prints out (using Gmail) in the confirmation email, that could have helped. Other than getting there, our stay was fantastic!
