Nice, VERY clean compared to most hostels/hotels in India. Food is poor and expencive, but they bring it to your front porch... Regarding Periyar National Park, DO NOT BOOK YOUR SAFARI WITH THE GUY WHO WORKS THERE! You can get the same thing for much cheaper if you book it in the park or at an agency. Don't believe him either if he tells you that you have to book ahead or any other lie he may invent just to get your money. Just go walking to an agency (is a 5min walk) or directly in the park.

What a crazy little find up in Kumily! Rainbow Cottage is totally rainbow and totally camp. Nice, spacious rooms (themed by color, even the toilets!), hot water showers and convenient to the bus station & high street. Seems successful too--the owner is building a big addition next door. The rooftop terrace is a lovely place to sit and have a drink. The only downside: a VERY loud mosque nearby. It may not be as bad on other floors, but on the top floor, it was a startling 5:00AM wake-up call.
