Really really social hostel to visit. I made so many great friends and even went back to stay a second time!

Nicely located a short bus ride from Cristo and a short walk from the metro. Staff were hit and miss. Some were more helpful than others. Plenty of nice communal places to chill out. Rooms were hot and a bit cramped. Beds were so-so as were the bathrooms. Make sure you go with plenty of clean clothes. Has no laundry facilities and there are none close by. Breakfast is ok. If you like ham and cheese toasties every day.
We picked this place because we had to spent one night before traveling to Ilha Grande, so the location didn't really matter that much. Given these circumstances, we really enjoyed our stay. Also, thank you for allowing us to pay the full amount upon arrival, not via the very unsecure credit card pre-authorization form that we were supposed to fill out and email back!
very very clean, common area very big and well equiped. confortable and clean beds, with AC, very friendly stuff who speaks very well english. the only downside of it were the broken lockers - not everybody had lockers and they didn't repair them, so make sure you have your own way of locking your valuable belongings and you will be fine.
Refúgio Hostel was a quite good option to stay in Rio. The staff was really helpful and fun! The only things I didn't like much was that if you take the top part of the bunk the ceiling will be right at your forehead (room: 10 ppl) and the air conditioning only starts working at 10pm, so if you wanna take an afternoon nap in summer, it's not gonna happen.
This was a calm and relaxed hostel during my extended stay. The beds are comfortable and the linens are fresh. The breakfast was good, fresh fruit, strong coffee, and breads. The kitchen space was clean and airy. On the flip side, our 6 person dorm was very cramped, and did not allow for much space for luggage. This was a bit dangerous at night, as the floor space was covered once we were near capacity. No A/C during day hours. The showers needed to be cleaned. The roof area needs more furniture

It is a great place, located close to Metro station and in middle of all the places you must see in Rio. The staff in the hostel is very good, super helpful and super nice.
Excellent location close to the Largo do Machado subway. The neighborhood is safe and locals gather at night at the near São Salvador square. Lapa can be reached in a 30 min walk, the beaches are between 3 and 7 subway stops away. The hostel is well organized and clean. The owners are trying to do the best for their guests, e.g. parties and vegetarian food. On the downside: no laundry service (could easily be organized); reception staff not always well informed (e.g. way to Dois Irmãos hill).
the only bad thing is the internet. very poor. they have new management and are doing their best to fix it. i am a 67 year old guy who spends a lot of time in Brasil. what i really like about the Refugio are the clients. you get the usual young travelers who are nice and they are not the typical "party animals" like the people who stay in places in Copacabana. even better, students and working people stay there. basically a good mix of travelers.

the location is great if you don't want to stay with the party crowed but still be close to the center of Rio. Staff was really great and helpfull (concerning informations on Rio and also further travelling details).
Only here for 1 night before I went home. Seems a decent hostel. Average breakfast but I have my own cereal. Near Flamengo main area with restaurants. Supermarket nearby. About 5 min walk from bus stop. Easy to get to stop from bus terminal with 4 buses going from there to the stop which is just past a bridge. Numerous other buses go past connecting other main sights.
Disappointing. Maybe better if you speak Portuguese but didn't have a great atmosphere - no socialising. Room was small, warm and no window. Area was ok but too far from everywhere. Do visit a restaurant called boteros nearby - one of the best places we've eaten at. Breakfast was ok but not exciting. Not great communal areas.
The bulk bed is really good to provide roomy headroom for both beds, it will be great if they could protect the corners of the higher bed, cos I see some people hit it while in the room.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. The whole hostel was very clean and the breakfast was fantastic (best I had in Brasil). The area is also nice, quite but still close by to all the cool areas in Rio. Facilities are great (WIFI could be a little faster maybe), and the roof-top chill out area is great. I loved my stay there.
I keep going back to Refugio, it's my favourite location because it's really easy to go everywhere and the neighbourhood is lovely. The female dorm is perfect (only the mattresses start to show their age) and I love the fact that you can also meet Brazilians there. Staff kept changing so far but they are always very friendly and helpful! Please give us more breakfast choice again, cereals would be nice and something sweet, not only ham and cheese. Jam?! :-) Thanks and see you again next year :-)
Great hostel! Very happy to find this place in Rio, just a few minutes from a major metro stop, close to Christ the Redeemer and had the best decorations and atmosphere! Loved it!
i really like refugio hostel. it is very conveniently located (walking distance to metro and on even ground). the area around is nice and relaxed and has all you´ll need (shops but also a praca to hang out listen to music and drink beer in the evening). it has some great things like individual lamps and a socket at each bed. the rooms are really high and the bunk beds are really good. unfortunately the mattresses are really poor (too soft). all front rooms are noisy though.
Could use more people as it was a bit quiet during the week (seemed to be people staying longer). Stayed in a 10 bed which had the privacy of a 4 bed which was awesome. Good set up and room was flash with bottom bunks that you could sit up in (which is a rarity) Kitchen was reasonably stoked and staff used it for lunch. Only drawback was that there seemed to be not many (no) hostel events organised and the main focus appeared to be the bistro that was open to the public for lunch.
Not the best hostel I stayed in. Beds were very uncomfortable, mattresses kind of hospital-style and bunk beds on top so low that you barely couldn't sleep. As well, the 10 bed dorm is kind of a living room of brazilians which is nice to get some good information but as they are out every night, people get home late anf sleep in. Nonetheless, breakfast was pretty good with coffee, sandwiches and fresh melons.
A bit quiet for younger people perhaps, however as a place is excellent!
