The staff keep a close eye on who is entering the hostel. The location is not right in the midst of the glitz and glamour of Copacabana, so it's usually a Metro or taxi to get to most things, but still it is not too far away. The staff were excellent - very friendly and professional - they gave me great advice on what I should do and see and the best way to do it. Atmosphere was sometimes a bit quiet but some may like that. They cleaned everyday and the staff worked hard. Air con was great!
No one at the hostel spoke English so it was hard to meet people.
Very few bathrooms, long waits to use them or to take a shower. Considering guest to bathroom ratio, the frequency of cleaning and maintenance could have been much better. Staff was not very helpful with booking outdoor activities, which is something that at least from impressions it prides itself in.
Refugio's old building is really nice, located in a central position and secure place.. But the guy working there during evening - night shift wasn't able to speak in English and really not interested in try to help us, not giving any tips or just not answering our questions... Room for 6 people is really too small and air conditioning freezing us, we asked him to put a little higher temperature (it was 22.. we asked for 25) but he said that was on the hostel's rules...
I just had a quick stop in Rio to stay overnight: central hostel with good internet and hot showers! I will come back...
