Hostel in the heart of Botafogo, 2mins walk to the Metro station with easy access to both Lapa nightlife (4 stops north) & Cobacabana/Ipanema for beach days (3/4 stops south). Botafogo feels safe and the locals welcome you as part of the community. I felt a lot safer in this area then compared to Central. The hostel is clean and has a nice outdoor area & chill out room with TV. Also a pool table and bar with happy hours and great caphirinas! The rooms are good value although a little cramped!
Very basic hostel, friendly staff but the ladies in the kitchen/cleaners make you feel like you shoudnt be in there cooking even though its a shared kitchen.
Overall the hostel is good. The room was a bit small for 9 people and their luggages, but the air conditioning works pretty well during the night, making it confortable. There are only 2 female showers for a whole floor, and that was a problem on the weekend when the hostel was full. Both showers were obstructed after some baths, so it was impossible to take a shower. Breakfast was small, but pretty decent. Staff members were really helpfull and even gave us tips about the city.
I really enjoyed my stay at Rio Soul Hostel. Overall, I thought the staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast in the morning was great. I do think 7:30am to 9:30am is a little early for breakfast hours in the morning for a hostel setting. I would have preferred it to last until 10am or start at 8am and end at 10am. It was unfortunate and inconvenient that the public computer had to be taken away due to viruses but glad the staff was on hand to answer questions instead. Obrigada!

Stayed here over carnival period. Over 50% of lockers in my room were broken. The lockers can't fit a 60ltr bag anyway. Paying a lot more to stay for carnival and with people wanting to sleep at completely different hours, you would have though 24 hour air conditioning for a few days wouldn't be too much to ask. Apparently so. Seems a place where the staff like to socialise, which to some customers could be considered intimidating. Receptionists were very good. Toilets
stayed during the Carnival 2015, the hostel was awful. The air con was switched off at 9am turning our 14 bed dorm into an unbearable sweat box.. The only room allowed aircon in the day was the one with the girl who was sleeping with the manager... EVERYWHERE throughout the hostel, literally straddling him in the tv area/bar etc etc. The staff just weren't interested in helping.. with anything. EVERYTHING WAS BROKEN. On carnival, when we pay 6x the normal rate, there is no happy hour.. Why?
Pros: Nice staf, good location in Botafogo near metro. Breakfast was good. Cons: Too many people and beds for one room / place. Room was tiny and had two 3 bed bunks, getting ready all at once was an absolute nightmare and there was not enough storage. My drawer lock was broken for the whole seven days. Bar didnt have a happy hour because it was "carnaval", stupid. Also if you want to put air con on in daytime just lift up the front face and push the button on bottom right - they turn it off
Great hostel with a top location 2 min from the metro and bus station, only the dorms were really packed, with 15 people in one dorm and 3 beds per bunk bed...
