Nice clean small place. Helpful staff. Wifi was shaky but that seemed pretty true in Penang in general. Curtains, power source, and light for each dorm bed. Breakfast (included) is toast and if you want to hard boil your own eggs. Free coffee, tea.
Really welcoming and helpful staff. Love the curtains on each bed to get a bit of privacy. No key and door to dorm doesn't lock but there is always someone downstairs so I guess they would stop any intruders, and there are small lockers outside the dorm to store valuables. It is small but well designed and very clean. Great hostel :)
There is just that one guy who made the stay and thus the atmosphere a bit weird. One evening he came and told us to be quite at 7:30pm, we werent partying, just talking. The other day he yelled for hours to someone on the phone, you could here that throughout the hostel. Then he started a discussion with another guest about why women shouldnt work, but rather do the household. He enters rooms not knocking on the door. The other staff was nice though. Cleanliness is perfect. Breakfast ok.
We booked a 4-bed female dorm, which was not situated in the Roommates building that you see in the photos here, but in another shoplot a street away. Location is good, with most of the tourist attractions within walking distance. The room we had was bare and basic, but beds and pillows were comfortable. Not the best hostel I've stayed in, but fine for a 1-night stay.
The location is easy to find. The environment of the hostel is good. Bed is comfortable and it's good that they provide curtain for each bed. Staff there are really helpful and friendly. Their also provide some recommendations for searching hostel in the next destination and place to go. Very good hostel!
Overall is good. It will better if the morning shift staff be more friendly. The staff in night shift is friendly.

The reason for the low rating is that, when we showed up at the hostel they informed us they overbooked and didnt even offer us a sorry. The just told us to check out other hostels in the area. After making an advance booking, this is not acceptable.

Toilet and shower in the same stall - makes things a bit crowded (and you have to wipedown the toilet each time you use it). Bit noisy (thin walls).
Very nice stay at Roommates - we got clean beds, the facilties were good and it was quite silent there, as there were few people staying right now. The staff were very talkative, informative and nice to chat with, especially the more grown up ones. The two younger men though, didn't seem very enthusiastic about their job. Location is also very good - one minute from Lb Chulia (one of the main roads) and Love Lane, two minutes from Little India and walking distanse to rest.
These guys really knew what they were doing when putting this place together, individual lights and international plug for each bunk and a curtain on each bed. The only downside for me was that I was cold at night, we didn't have an air conditioner controller and so it was on or off (I did notice on my last day that all the controllers were at the front desk so perhaps we could just have asked for it to be changed at night.)
I stayed in the female dorm, clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and organised my onward travel to the Cameron highlands. Good location to hawker stalls, convenience shops and cafes in Georgetown. Also good breakfast and use of washing machine.
Good location. The room is very clean, with air-conditioning. Every bed has own light and curtain which keeps privacy and convenience. The reception space is also very cozy and atmospheric where I liked to stay and take rest SO MUCH after a whole-day-tour! Staff there are also kind and willing to help. The water in one of the shower rooms had difficulty to drain but staff there took care of the problem immediately.
Laundry facilities very convenient! Wifi a little weak in the rooms.
The room was good with your own light, plug and curtain. Kind staff and very well located.
Kind, informative and welcoming staff who were English speaking and very happy to provide help and recommendations. The hostel was very clean. Dorm beds were bigger than single beds, very spacious and comfy. Each bed comes with an individual reading light and plug socket, and each bed has it's own curtain for privacy. Dorms are also air conditioned. Free breakfast in the morning is toast and/or eggs with tea or coffee. roommates is is in a good location for exploring Penang and close to bars.
Clean place, Air conditioned (important in hot places), Friendly staff, Good location, Met a lot of like minded people.

This was by far the best hostel I stayed at during my months traveling. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful whilst the hostel itself is located in the perfect location for exploring Georgetown and the surrounding areas. If getting to Georgetown by bus, get off at Butterworth station and use the ferry as it puts you much closer to the hostel than the bus station on the island itself. Overall, a great place to stay!
