I've been to hostels all over the world and this is the most calm and home-like hostel I have stayed in. Pablo does a great job making his guests comfortable and helping them with anything they need. Located in the middle of Tijuca Forest, it's a great getaway from the craziness of Copacabana, Lapa, etc.

Our stay at Safari Hostel during the World Cup was great! Paulo is very helpful, friendly, and helped us get to all of the places we wanted to be. He showed us around the rainforest area and gave us good tips for the best hiking spots. This is a great place to stay if you want to see some nature, be comfortable with lots of space and clean amenities, and feel at home. The breakfast was the best we had during our trip spanning 10 days! There's also a bar and gas station located across the street.

Paulo was the best host I could have ever asked for on my vacation to Brazil. He goes out of his way to make you feel at home and welcome. On the first day I arrived, it was raining - so he took me on a tour through the park in his car to make sure I knew where to go the next day. The facilities are beautiful and the breakfast was incredible. The area is removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown Rio, and the nature surrounding the place is beautiful. Great for hikers and bikers.

I'm sure this hostel is awesome during the on-season, with a great meeting area, solid facilities, and comfortable beds. But do be aware that during off-season it's likely to be *completely* empty. It was literally just me and a snoring 80-year-old in the dorm, no atmosphere at all, and to top it off the internet wasn't even working. The owner's epic response was that 'the internet isn't working in the whole world'. Unhelpful and a generally miserable experience, and no apology or refund.

We had a great time in Rio during carnival. Except for the little remote location of the hostel to the center, this hostel was perfect. A lot of space, great breakfast, very helpful staff!!

The only no excellent thing about Safari Hostel, is that it you will be spending money on buses, subway and/or taxi's to get anywhere. That being said, it is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, copacabana, ipanema, etc. and is VERY quiet and peaceful. Paolo and his family are very helpful and friendly!!!

More like a guesthouse than a hostel. Paolo and his wife will treat you like family. Location is a nice respite from the chaos of Rio, and is only a short bus ride or cab away from the beach of Sao Conrado or Centro. Cannot be beat! A true gem.

A very comfortable hostel in a historic house, providing a warm personal welcome. The dorms are well appointed, the washing facilities are clean and plentiful. There is a beautiful large common room and the generous buffet breakfast is served in the garden. Not for people who want to walk straight out from their hotel into the touristy streets, but located in an area that is easily accessible by public transport, and next door to the entry of a wonderful National Park, well worth a visit too.

This place was just what we were looking for! We had been on a long tour around south America and when arriving into rio at carnival time we wanted some where we could chill out and relax! The public transport here meant that it was easy to get anywhere in the city. The hostel is set up to encourage you to meet and migle with other travelers. The owners Paulo and Anna go out of their way to know evey ones names and make sure you have everything you need! Oh and breakfast was the best ever!

Staying at Safari was incredible, Paulo is such a character, there is a very genuine and deep sense of hospitality here, and the place is gorgeous and the food is amazing. A really great spot to explore the nature a beauty of Rio, really tranquil yet pretty easy to head down to the party areas as well. We didn't have any trouble going out in Lapa or Copa and heading back again.. The four of us felt very happy staying here, strongly recommend! Thank you!! :)

Thank you for an excellent stay! You were a magnificent host, and we felt extremely welcomed in the hostel. Everything was perfect, from the food to the drinks and the furnishings. Thank you for being one of the best parts of our stay in Rio!

Ana and Paulo are amazing hosts; very helpful, flexible and willing to make you feel at home. Ana's cooking is great! The hostel is a lovely old building on a small quiet square and is the perfect location for hiking in the forest. Its easy to catch a bus from the square to the subway or bus station and get to anywhere you want to go from there.

As a young woman traveling alone I felt very safe and comfortable at Safari. They have hot showers, super comfy beds, and the best food! Paulo and Anna are lovely and interesting people! They are willing to help you get to wherever and do whatever you like! The location is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the beautiful Tijuca forest. There is a bus stop right across the street from Safari, and it is just a 10 minute ride to the metro. I give Safari my highest recommendation!!!!

This place is a beautiful haven up in the hills of Rio's National Tijuca Park. The owner Paulo and his manager Achiles make you feel immediately at home with their level of customer service and warm and open characters. The mattresses are incredible, and the breakfast is 5 star ... Fresh eggs, fruit, cereal, bread and juice. The natural fauna beauty is literally on your doorstep alternatively you have an incredible beach only a 10 minute bus ride down the mountain. Would I stay here again? Yes!

Calling Safari Hostel a hostel is a little misleading. It’s a multi-million dollar home whose owner has decided to invite guests. I suspect that in the near future the price is going to sky rocket and it will become a retreat for the exceptionally wealthy. The level of personal care was stunning. We returned drunk at 3AM and the owner who happened to be awake made us homemade pizza. Over carnival dinner and drinks where included free of charge (I’m not sure if that’s standard). The only neg

From the moment you step through the huge double doors into a stunning spacious high ceilinged bar and seating area with a stove fire you will be in awe at this gem of a hostel. Paulo and Achiles make you welcome from the onset and work tirelessly to ensure your stay is as comfortable and entertaining as possible. Safari is a breath of fresh air to any weary traveller. A stones throw from the National Park of Tijuca and a short trip to Rio's stunning beaches. We'll definately stay again.

This was a truly unique experience. I travel a lot and never seen a hostel like this. Everything was amazing, starting from the beautiful location near Tijuca National Park and old house to wonderful hospitality of Paulo, Achiles and Ana Cristina. Without them my stay wouldn´t be so awesome. Especially going around the city with Achiles was an experience that Lonely Planet guide will not tell you about. The beach in Barra de Tijuca was near and Ipanema and Leblon were not far away on the bus.
