The dorms are quite nice specially as there is an ensuite bathroom. But the common area is a bit smelly, quite and the atmosphere is not really nice. The TV program doesnt work properly. Only 3 programs. Not the best place for solo travellers. Location altough is good, right next to the other hostels in the street and some pubs.

Stayed in Paihia three nights, all of them at Saltwater Lodge. The staff are really cool and help with bookings for skydiving or cruises. The common room is well equipped with a boatload of movies and lounges. The atmosphere is fantastic and everyone who stays here seems to have a good time!

Just a great hostel, one of the two best of my whole trip through NZ. Free bike hire, even if the bikes are not the newest, is great. Facilities, kitchen, rooms, all are cleaned daily and have all you need. Brilliant place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Saltwater Lodge. The kitchen was not as clean as hoped;quite grubby. More the fault of the guests who did not clean up after using the facility.

Perfectly adequate but nothing flash to justify the "flashpacker" description or slightly higher price than other hostels on the kings rd strip. Staff were friendly and helpful, there was a large kitchen and living area with a good choice of videos. The room was clean and spacious with large lockers. However facilities were fairly basic and here was no real atmosphere even though there were plenty of guests, and the sliding doors to the rooms were generally left unlocked by other guests.
