The room was big, air con worked well and we didn't really hear much noise from outside. Good location for restaurants and bars. A few streets away was a night market and more food stalls. The owner was really friendly and marked everything we needed to know on a map he gave us. He also booked our tickets to our next stop for us.

Seriously average hotel physically speaking but the extremely friendly and helpful staff make up for what the building lacks. I'm not sure how much it varies but while we were there (Nov) it was a full house for both nights so show up without a booking at your own risk. It was okay for a short stopover.

I enjoyed my stay at Shanghai hotel. The room cost R45 and for that I got a double bed on the ground floor with a big window to the alley outside. There are a couple of massage parlors down the street which were very active at night but that didn't bother me. The muslin no alcohol restrictions certainly contributes to the safety in the streets. There is a good choice of restaurants nearby and a McDonalds a few blocks away.

The place is maybe not to compare with a 5 star hotel but the most sympatic and helpful person here in Ipoh is surely its owner, Mr. Chang!!! Had an awesome chinese meal with him and a lovely sightseeing around the city! Would come back here even if I could afford to stay at the Mandarin Oriental...
