Overall I really enjoyed my stay at Southern Laughter. I thought the quirky posters throughout the hostel were clever and entertaining. But, I did have one issue at the end of my stay. I paid the key deposit but was told that it was not marked in the book. So, I ended up not getting my money back due to the disorganization of the staff at the given moment. Although it was only 10 dollars, I was a little upset at the lack of organization.

If you don't like sleeping and love to be kept awake all night by other people partying then this is the place to go. It was horrible trying to get any sleep in this place - the people in every room around our double room - beside, behind, above - were shouting, drinking, and partying until all hours of the morning. This place really needs to put in place some quiet hours because not everybody likes to get drunk and party - some people come to New Zealand for the amazing scenery not just alcohol

Southern laughter is a decent hostel which could easily be improved. The hostel is in a nice location near town and very close to the gondola. Liked the pictures on the walls and the free soup was tasty. Bathrooms were ok but the towel mats in the showers were filthy. A real lack of plates, cutlery etc as when we were there people were drinking their free soup out of pots and pans. Obnoxious travellers on our last night seemingly making an effort to be loud and rude. Ok for a short stay only.

Great location with friendly staff. Slept well in a double room, although did get woken by people out on the shared balcony early in the morning. Place did get a bit messy though - there was a large group in our lounge/kitchen who didn't appear to go outside the hostel for 3 days and left stuff everywhere, but I guess that's not the hostel's fault!

Very dissapopinted with the reception staff, particuarly the young girl who was very rude and very unhelpful. Rooms very ordinary, like a shoe box, The kitchens were disgusting. Was not a happy stay considering it wrote up well and was in a great location.

Very dirty and untidy kitchen in the mornings. The same with bathrooms. Unfortunately too expensive for such a poor service.

LOVED IT! Gorgeous space, close to downtown. Fun atmosphere, super helpful staff, would stay here again any time! Especially loved the plum tree in our yard. :)

Stayed at the Southern Laughter for 2 nights. First of all, there is a really great friendly crowd at the hostel and the staff were good as well. Unfortunately it doesn't make up for the fact that the hostel was a bit of a dive and in desperate need of some investment. I was in the annex block, and the kitchen had seen better days and the bedroom was very stuffy, with no ventilation. Thinnest pillows ever as well! Would only stay, if desperate. So many better hostels in Queenstown.

Only stayed here one night, but encountered some problems. The kitchens were poorly equipped and a little dirty. Our room was also incredibly hot the whole night, making it very difficult to sleep, so there is obviously problems with the insulation. That said, it was a comfy place with ample space to chill out. The veggie soup was to die for. But get there early 'coz it goes in a flash!

Average hostel, not amazingly clean or well equipped but enough for a place to sleep at night.

Nice hostel, good location up the hill from town with nice view over the lake. About 10 minute walk from the Intercity bus stop, just doable with the rucksacks! Nice rooms but it did have a glass panel in the door so people can see in - there is a curtain though! Didn't avail of the bonus things such as the spa pool which was full the evening we got there, and I think the soup is available in one of the kitchens but not in the block we were in. Other than that all good!

We stayed in a double private room w shared kitchen and bathroom facilities with a 4 bed dorm. The room was secure and quite OK for a hostel. The shared facilities felt a bit unclean and we found it a bit difficult to use them because the 4 bed dorm people took over a bit (2 different groups during our 3 night stay there). It would have been good to keep the dorms and the private rooms separate. Overall, the hostel is old and run-down but the staff are friendly and helpful. Great location.

The hostel really felt like home....I continued to extend my stay there because I loved and staff were amazing...I had a death in the family and they were so kind to let me have the dorm room to myself for privacy. They went above and beyond my expectations...
