Sparky\'s has lots of character and we enjoyed our stay there very much. Chocolate cake and the evening was great fun and the taste of the cake was awesome! Sparky\'s is unique in a positive way and should stay like that. Keep going!

invercargill being a slow town, non touristy, sparky's is the reason to come here, relax and chill, feel like home, get a treat from sparky - his homemade chocholate cake.feel cozy by the 2 burning fires, 1stove to help heat water and have a full time supply for showering, have some fun, a free light breakfast.the place is undergoing constant upgrade and does have a great atmosphere(burt munro-world's fastest indian),not a bad drive from queenstown (100min) then via the catlins to dunedin.do it!

We only stayed one night, thank goodness. While the room was satisfactory, this was about all. The kitchen was scruffy and dirty. One shower room was just adequate, the other shower over a bath, in very poor condition, and this bathroom was dirty and very scruffy. The washing machine worked, but there was no tumble dryer so impossible to dry clothes overnight. Irritated by having to take our shoes off inside, esp as floors dirty.

I would like to apoligise to these guests, and point out that unforchunately I have recently had a knee injury, which has made me unable to do simple things like make beds and vacumn,I have had some staff do some of the cleaning and maintenace around the hostel. We are continuing an upgrade/renovation of the hostel. The shower room that the guests complained about (the room that is just adequate)has been commented on as being nicely decorated and hot shower etc so I cant really see what they are on about. We strive to be the best hostel in Invercargill, but it also takes alot of money to continue to do renovations and alterations, the bath is going to be taken out and a new shower put in,(hopefully we have a busy winter season once the jacuzzi is operational, more guests more $$$$$ to renovate the bathroom.

This place was just weird! Its not a hostel, its Sparky's house, there is clutter everywhere, no room to cook or sit to eat. Felt very uncomfortable. The most frustrating thing was having to get up and ask everybody to shut up as they were all drinking outside our room well past midnight. THEN Sparky had the cheek to suggest we were in the wrong for not joining in and drinking with them! Sorry, we had stuff to do the next day? Overall, its just such an odd place. An acquired taste.

Please do not forward this comment to the backpackers. This just for hostelworld: We found it a bit strange, that the backpackers is in the managers flat. There is one kitchen with a small table with four chairs, but around 20 beds.

I DONT UNDERSTAND,what the guest is talking about, regarding the managers flat, there is no managers flat, the house is now a hostel, there are not 20 beds in the hostel yes there is one kitchen,it works there is two cooking facilities electric oven and 4 element hotplate set into other bench..guests are allowed to cook in the kitchen then take their meals and dine in the lounge where there is also a small table.the plan is to expand the hostel (at the back) and build more rooms and kitchen etc when finances permit.

I stayed here 2 different times and I really loved it. Lovely atmosphere, Sparky makes yourself at home, it's clean, beautiful surroundings, perfectly managed (try the delicious chococake and tell me). The location is great too, especially to get Stewart Island If u care. This is a great hostel indeed!! You can either really stay on your own, using the cooking facilities or enjoy the night with the Invercargill dishes. If 1 day I can back to N.Z. I'll back to Sparky's surely, no other worths!!!
