Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers has a nice location across the road from the lake and just a short walk from the town center. The room was cozy enough but the shower would not generate any hot water which makes for a poor hygenic experience in cold weather. Also, the toilets take exceptionally long to refill with water after flushing. This may not seem like a big deal, but when traveling with a group of 4 it can become a small nuisance to have to wait 5 minutes between flushings.

It's a very good place to relax. In the kitchen is a lot of space to cook. I would recomend it.

Great location, bathrooms clean, quiet, staff seemed friendly and helpful except for one girl at front counter who seemed a bit shirty. Lots of european backpackers, lots of arrogant trekkers, not my scene. Common rooms not very big, not enough seating or tables in kitchen or TV room for the amount of guests. Impossible to find somewhere to sit at meal times. Beautiful location on lake but would try the YHA around the corner next time. $5 bag storage for trek was good value.

Everything was good except shower. Hot shower was very temperamental, sometime it worked, sometimes only cold shower or not much water at all. All else was good, thank you

on the negative - hostel is a bit old and tired and needs an overhaul. dormitories didnt have any lockers for personal things. bathroom windows were so big and hip height you could have climbed through. no personal lights near bed. On the plus side. .lovely view of Lake Te Anau from the balcony, great open fire to warm your cockles to. Good tv to watch films

The room with banks was far too small for 2 adults plus luggage to stay in. Banks were very hard to get in and out of.

PROS> location (everything is nearby), staff (helpfull), storage room ($5 for entire Kepler trek which we have done), triple room (spacious), cleaniness was average CONS> internet (very slow and expensive as almost everywhere in NZ), kitchen a bit untidy. Recommended!

Even if it is advertised as a place with Internet, do not count on it. The latency in Te Anau is between crappy and very crappy. Special thanks to the staff who helped me when I was sick. Shared double bedroom are nice, but some kitchens lacks basic furniture (but the main kitchen has all you need).

People are right...there is one particular staff who is VERY unfriendly. This hostel is in a great location. The dorm rooms are large. The main kitchen is large and well equipped.

Six person ensuite dorm had balcony access with the view of the lake - awesome! Also had another room with couches and small kitchenette as part of our dorm. Staff was average - no issues, but not very eager to help either. Best kitchen setup of all I have seen with six or seven separate cooking stations and a number of sinks to make sure people are out of each others ways. Internet was on expensive side, free at the library not far away. More cars than usual, so parking seemed a bit crowded.

We booked a 'three bed' private room which turned out to have one double and one single bed. Lucky we knew each other pretty well! There were NOT enough showers or toilets. There was only one shower to service a number of dorms, and on the first night there it seemed blocked and badly flooded. One positive thing was that they have a large long-term service room and stored all of our bags for four days for a flat $5 fee.

For the most part the stay was good although I felt the service could have been a bit better given the price.

I love the location, and I love Te Anau. The hostel left a lot to be desired. There was only one shower, the kitchen was a disaster. But the view is gorgeous and if you're in Te Anau, it's a good place to hang out for the evening.

Nice place, perfect if you're setting out on a trek. The beds are comfy and they are happy to store your extra equipment for a few days while you do the Kepler Track etc.

A decent hostel on the lake with a large kitchen. The ensuite showers do make the whole bathroom floor a bit damp but otherwise the hostel is fine.
