We booked our room because of the good reviews, but as we arrived we weren’t happy. It was dirty and musty. The staff didn't care about us. We just took a shower and started visiting Chiang Mai, which is really a lovely city with a lot of gorgeous opportunities. While walking around we decided to move to another hostel without spending a night in our room at the Thapae Gate Lodge. The staff didn’t ask us, why we are leaving so quickly. They didn’t even say goodbye. We paid the room already!

Great hostel! There is a restaurant attached which has amazing food which is extremely convenient. The rooms are very clean and have everything you need.

Well located and reasonably nice facilities. Not the cheapest budget option, but the double room with AC we booked was clean, well furnished and quite comfortable. Pricing was just right for the accommodations. The staff was friendly for the most part, but nothing extraordinary. Very much a come-and-go-and-keep-to-yourself sort of place, but for some that's ideal. The real clincher about this place is the restaurant on the ground floor. Excellent food options! We ate here quite a bit.

The best breakfast menu in all of Chiang Mai. Good value for money, seeing as you get a clean room with a strong fan and a bathroom with hot and cold shower. Staff is friendly but not really good salespeople. We tried asking about trekking trips and they showed us brochures, but didn't really care if we bought anything or not. Price for trekking was also higher than if you went to a local travel agency.

Nice place, very good location, excellent value for money. They serve amazing breakfast in their restaurant, you have to try it. Lovely lounge serving drinks where you can relax at any time of the day.

Nice hostel. The location is great, right on the edge of the Old Town, close to the Temples, restaurants and local food stalls. It's about a 15 minute walk to The Night Bazaar. There was a slight problem with water in our room but the owner kindly let us change rooms- the place is really good and staff very nice, we ended up staying 3 extra nights. There's also good wifi and a very comfortable lounge area to surf internet, read a book or simply enjoy a drink (the bar is open until late).

We had a great stay here. The location is amazing, right in the old town close to the Thapae Gate. We had a double private with aircon. It was clean and safe, and the staff was very helpful when we needed. Also, i can definetly recommend the breakfast, its great!

Chilled out place to stay with friendly, helpful staff. Just lacking in atmosphere and could have done with a secure locker - great value for money though!

Constructive feedback: 1. The food is impressive, should be used as a strong point 2. Something new needs to be added, in the open space a place to hang out, chat and chill 3. Improving the lobby.... not just a place to sleep 4. Cleanliness is good and staff attitude is impressive.... will certainly stay again

Good place to stay if you're german I would say, but I'm not so it was okay in general. The room was clean, but I was on the ground floor and it was very noisy. We were awaken very early by the staff going around two days in a row (the only two days we spend there). The street is actually very cute. There is a lot of restaurants and bars around that you can try out. The location was great, but the staff was not talking a good english.

Not bad to stay a relaxing life here. But, the cleanliness in the room need to be improve a lot, especially the mattress.

We really enjoyed our stay at Thapae Gate. The cleanliness of the sheets was slightly questionable and the free towels had an odd smell. However it was a really nice place with an amazing breakfast menu. This definitely influenced our decision to book this hostel. Would also highly recommend the lemon juice with mint. The staff were quite helpful although sometimes they did not seem to understand our questions.

Our stay at Thapae Gate Logde was a good time. But what was the best there was the breakfast. We never had so excellent breakfast in Thailand like at Olafs place for such a good price!!! Congratulations

Our stay at Thapae gate lodge was good, the staff were mostly really helpful and went out of their way organising some trips that we wanted to do. Thery weren't pushy about us booking trips there but they have many brochures and just helped us book what we wanted. The attached restaurant - Chiang Mai breakfast world have the largest selection of breakfasts we've seen, I counted over 70 on the menu! No complaints.

The friendly, helpful staff really made our stay here enjoyable. Clean room, cold air con, fast wifi, great location in old city. The restaurant has a great variety of tasty food. The staff booked tours and onward travel when asked, but never tried to push anything on us. Will stay here again when we return.

I think that the only thing lacking from the Lodge is the hostel ideology of group together-ness. That there is a place to gather, and is welcoming for other guests to mingle and talk, and I thought that was a bit lacking. Other than that the Lodge was fantastic.

We had no windowglasses, so we could hear the sound of the streets and bars just below from our windows. The staff (esapcially the owner, the german man) was very rude and unfriendly. The shower and the room were ok, but not so clean.

In a tiny room with attached bathroom, I had to go OUT of the room and OUT of the building to use a sink. Toilet is inside, shower is inside, but to wash your hands or brush your teeth you need to open your door for mosquitoes and step outside of the room. Stayed only one night. You can find heaps of much better value hostels and guesthouses in Chiang Mai for similar prices.
