The location is farther out than most guest houses, but still only a $2 tuk tuk ride from the main nightlife. The staff speak varying degress of english so communication can sometime be difficult, but in general its ok. Although there is a pool table, pool, food, bar, and loud music, the atmosphere is never very lively. This is mostly because their prices of drinks are comparatively expensive and there is no happy hour.

Thank you for the feedback. Cambodia and Phnom Penh are not like western cities, as there has never been any city planning, so the city is spread far and wide. Eighty8 is no more than 200 meters from the focal point of Phnom Penh and the temple that the city derives its name from, Watt Phnom. We have no happy hours due to exceptionally cheap standard prices for alcohol, $1 a draft beer, similar prices for spirits and of course our favorite happy truffles at $1.25 We pride our selves on the swimming pool which can not be had in any other hostels in the city due to there size, and cost. The next available hotel / hostel with a swimming pool will set you back about $40 a night, so $7 a night is surely the bargain of the century. Please note that we pay for staff to go to English lessons, and yes they speak at varying levels of competence, this is a 3rd world country and English is not their first language, we hope that by learning English the staff can go on to do bigger and better things, you should have sat down with some of the poorer speakers and taught them some new words:-)

Above average place to stay for a backpacker thanks to the pool. Dorms are awesome, air-con and a nice duvet to keep you warm if its too chilly! One gripe I have: prices are waaaaaayyy too high. $9 for a motorbike rental? seriously? I got it for $4 by going to a rental shop (I heard if you know where to go it's $2) $3.75 for chicken fried rice? walk across the street and get it for 75cents. The prices made me stay away from the hostel when I would have normally given them some business..

Thank you for the informative feedback, and we are happy that you liked the dorm rooms :-) Please note about the cost of our food compared to street food is because of strict western hygiene standards we follow, this includes purified water used in all cooking processes, meat that is kept refrigerated from killing the animal to cooking the food for your consumption, We use fresher greens, often imported due to poor quality control from local produce. We are aware that we charge more, this is due to a higher cost of production. If you can stomach the lack of hygiene and the high use of MSG from the street food, then $0.75 is a good option that we would recommend. You would have noticed as well that we have nothing on our menu over the price of $5 apart from specials. Restaurants in Phnom Penh who also adhere to our strict standards of hygiene would not charge you $3.75, they would charge at least double. We set up Eighty8 to fill a hole in the market in terms of western standards for budget travelers, we aim to please all, and are sad that we did not meet your criteria on food budget, but hopefully you can understand the reasons behind what by western standards is still exceptionally cheap food :-)

Very friendly staff. The bar outside with terasse and swimming pool was very nice. I would have expected less for 8 dollars a night. Very good value. Hostel s somehow a little far of the center ( 10 minutes walk).

The staff was mostly friendly and helpful. However, they made a mistake on my visa request for Vietnam and the guy I complained to was very rude about it, saying he didn't believe me. I asked for a 30 day visa and they gave me a 15 day. Now I am going to have to waste 30+ $ and a day or two getting an extension (I'm not going to trust it to some else again)

I was thoroughly disappointed in this place. The rooms were clean and decent, but it was the atmosphere of the place, and the staff's disinterest in helping that really turned me off. I felt like I had to beg them to answer my questions, and when I did ask, I seemed to bother them. There are more staff than hostel guests yet customer service is not their forte. The music in the bar area is very loud even when no one is there. Food is more expensive than elsewhere too.

Hello, We are very disappointed that you are disappointed. We pride ourselves in our staff and the local knowledge that they have and are willing to provide to all customers. We can only suggest that English not being the first language here in Cambodia, that our backroom staff (kitchen and cleaning) don't speak English well. Could you have been speaking to them and not our reception or bar staff? With the music, we leave this to customers to select and play, more often than not, it is a customers ipod plugged in and playing. You should have asked for the music to be changed or turned down, this is never a problem as we aim to please customers, so if that means quiet music then this is what you shall receive. Food, yes, we charge more for our food than local restaurants and cafes, we charge more because we use western hygiene standards, like purified drinking water in all cooking and meat that has been properly stored (refrigerated) from the live animal to your plate. So yes you can get cheaper food outside the guest house, but you are opening yourself up to all sorts of suspect hygiene standards, so this is really personal choice and how strong your stomach is. We are happy that your found our rooms clean and decent, again, we make sure that we go above and beyond local standards to make your stay special, eg, we have mattresses that are resistant to bed bugs to make sure you have a clean and healthy stay. Maya, we hope you come back to Eighty8 and try again, as we would like that your see our business the way we see it as a product striving to improve and excel for all customers. thank you for the feedback.

The tuktuk driver only showed the paper with my name on it only when I was about to call the hostel but earlier on, he kept on insisting that he knew the place and he even described the hostel for us. Since he never get any dollars from us, we hopped from one bus co to another and forced us to buy those overcharged fare to Siem Reap. When we finally reached the hostel, the staff asked us to pay $2 to the tuktuk driver since we do not have plans of taking him for our tour the following day!

Dear Customer, we have stopped the particular tuk tuk driver from working at Eighty8. We are sorry for the miss-hap, this wont happen again. Also with regards to you swapping buses we are not sure what has happened here, as we are not responsible for the bus companies. So we could take this part of your problem any further. Thank you for the feedback, regardless of good or bad we take all reviews seriously and use them to help improve our service for future customers.

I stayed there for two nights. The first night was a little rough as the reception seemed unpleasant at first. The a/c broke the first night and no one really had any solutions. It almost seemed like 'well there's nothing we can do, so deal with it'. After we kept persisting, the situation was fixed and all was well. After getting to know/talk to the reception, it was a great experience, with great staff, travelers and of course the pool option. Good atmosphere.

This is a great place for backpackers wanting to meet new people or exchange experiences! The communal area is very nice, with pooltable and swimming pool, the restaurant offers a wide variety of good dishes. The dorms are ok, but we found a single bathroom with toilet and shower together not convenient for 8 people. The location is outside of city centre and riverside, so you'll need a tuktuk to get around. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

A great place! Staff was friendly and fun. More laid back than the Mad Monkey but still good for meeting other travelers. The place is within walking distance from town but it's worth it to take a tuk-tuk to get around. Dorms were clean with good air-con. The food was not too pricey but it was very good. Good walking distance to the Le Royal hotel if you feel like being posh for Happy Hour. Will definitely recommend and would love to come back.

The food and drink were relatively expensive for PP, but that was more than made up for by the friendliness of the staff (especially the 3pm-12am host, whose name escapes me) and the fantastic cocktails! A few sunloungers would be a great addition to the poolside.

A very respectable hostel, great character and all staff are super friendly. I met lots of other travellers here which was really good fun. The pool is great and the common area is nice, the prices are reasonable and the wifi was always working although they have no computers of their own. Would come back again!

Having a swimming pool to escape the heat of the afternoon was a real bonus, but it's a shame the bar was a bit on the pricey side. There's free wifi aplenty, but they don't have a computer or a phone that dials out of the country, which is a pain if all your bank accounts get stopped!

staff generally friendly and helpful most of the time;.some of them especially one was a bit aggressive. He reached into my day pack and helped himself to candy there. No big deal but inappropriate I think. The bar music is totally out of control. I asked to lower the volume, which they did slightly, and another bartender few minutes later goes and cranks it up higher than before

I felt the staff was great, however I stayed for 4 nights and the pool was not working for 2 of these 4 nights. I don't know if they experience problems with the pool regularly but I chose this hostel specifically for pool use so that was annoying for me. Also, I had to take an 8am bus and was up at 7. Food is not served until 8am but the cook came early. I would think the kitchen opens around 7 or 7.30. The staff was quite helpful and I felt they did a good job serving.

The swimming pool and decor ensures a very impressive environment. The noise in the communal area cannot be heard in the dorms.

I found the reception staff rude. I also booked an bus ticket to Siem Reap through the reception desk but was sold the wrong ticket so when I got to the station they wouldn't allow me on the bus and demanded I pay more even though I had already paid the correct amount to the hostel. On the plus side, the beds dorm bunkbeds are huge and comfy.
