Remote, hence a little bit difficult to reach, but the aim of this hostel is to be in a quiet and pleasant environment close to the great wall. It is therefore very relaxing, with very good room (dormitory), a lot of lovely cats and very nice and helpful staff. Very good for people who want to hike on more authentic portion of the great wall, far from the touristic and crowded area (the end of the hike reach this area, you will see the difference).

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed in. Homecooked meals at the end of a day of hiking were a great way to end the day and they were so yummy Amazing hikes around the village, I hardly saw anyone most of the days I was on the wall, great access and map is clear and easy to understand. I stayed for four nights and one day I did nothng but read books from there awesome collection, tried different green teas which they offered me and you can do yoga aswell. Stay here and treat yourself!

We loved our time at this guesthouse. It is a little hard to find from the villagemainstreet, but it is so close to the wall and surrounded by mountains. Theguesthouse is a peaceful refuge with serene decor and nice courtyard. Community dinner was fun and we liked trying the yellow wine! Sophie and staff were lovely and helpful and I enjoyed doing some yoga with Sophie! Only complaint is the lack of lockers or locks on our dorm, but the hostel is kept locked so we had no problems.

It's an amazing place. We stayed for 2 nights and this is actually not enough. If you are looking for a beautiful, quiet, lovely place to relax and to explore the great wall just for yourself, it's the perfect place. We took the bus to go there. It takes about 2-3 hours. It's quite easy to find. The staff is great! Helpful with everything and so nice. @Joe&Sophie: Wish you all the best !!

Characterful hostel with lovely accomodating hosts. This is a great place to see the Great Wall, it\'s quaint and certainly not overrun by tour busses and day tourists. Great hiking options at different levels, the staff can advise. Can get a little chilly at night, but enough blankets are provided for. Loved the communal dinners with nice home cooked food and met some interesting fellow diners. The many cats roaming around add to the atmosphere of the hostel.

Lots of space, very clean, great staff (helpful and many English speakers), modern, quiet。 Overall one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at! A really nice sleepy town too。 The only minor things to mention are that the food was a bit expensive at the hostel (but there are good restaurants nearby) and we almost got lost at the detour from the Gubeikou wall to the Jinshanling section. There were no large or small lockers in the room, although I'm sure Joe or Sophie could have locked th

It was the most relaxing hostel and felt more like you were staying at a friends home. The food was delicious and the hiking adventures up the ancient parts of the great wall were awesome. Stay at this place if you want to get away from Beijing and have a "GREAT" wall experience off the beaten track and away from the tourist traps - just be prepared for a 3 hour + journey to get there and consider a taxi from the second leg of the trip from Beijing.

I decided to visit Gubeikou as I wanted to see the wild great wall. The Great Wall Box House was great: easy to find, good food, very clean, fast Internet connection (this in China may be a problem) and, most important, great host. Joe and Sophie are great and I hope to come back soon!

Coming here was my favourite experience in China. Great hostel and extremely accommodating people. But the Wall is the attraction. There is 2 treks in different directions from the hostel along the wall. Unfortunately I only had enough time to do the 1 and I am disappointed in missing out on the other. On the trek I did, I didn’t see another person. Awesome!I just wish I stayed an extra night!

A great destination for the lone traveler looking for respite from the City Center and the opportunity to interact with local people in a rural setting! Made it to the B&B without a lick of Mandarin thanks to clear directions sent via email ahead of time. Walked for hours along the Great Wall without another soul in sights each day for three days. Stayed another night because the staff were so friendly - not to mention, the food was so good and the bed so comfortable!

Great hostel. The location is really good, close to a part of the great wall without to many people. On a 4 hours hike we only met 2 people. They serve a family dinner every night and it is so good and the hosts are very friendly.

Joe was a great host and our only regret was that we had prepaid our booking for Beijing and couldn't change our plans and stay longer. We enjoyed our family style dinners with the other guests. There are several Great Wall hiking experiences to be found in the area, from sollitary and crumbling to well preserved and challenging as well as 'too steep for me'. After 4 months in Asia, this will be remembered as one of the highlights. Thanks to Joe and Sophie.
