I think this hostel can only survive because there is very little competition in Utrecht. The room was dark and loud (thin glass directly on the party-street). There was only one toilet / shower room for a 18 person room. One can imagine how clean you can keep something like this. On the upside I think the owners are aware of the problem and give away lots of free food - so if you are travelling on a low budget - you'll never have to buy your own food as long as you are staying there.

The lights in this whole building should be replaced; I don't think it's too dirty, but the poor lighting makes everything look worse. Not the most comfortable or the cleanest place to stay, but at least it's cheap. Lots of food around - they cook breakfast for you! - and six working computers for free.
