Awesome place and furnuture (very comfortable beds), very cozy in general with a huge kitchen and living room all in vintage style. In the bar and restaurant downstairs drinks are awesome and atmosphere perfect for a relaxed evening with some live music. The only thing to critize are the few lockers in the rooms. Even though there is the same number of beds and lockers, sme of them were hard to use as their position was under the stairs of the bunk beds.

What an awesome hostel. It was absolutely gorgeous! Everything was super clean and the beds were really comfy. The location was amazing as it was right across the street from a park that overlooked Lisbon. The breakfast was small but good. It's a little hard to find because the sign is so small on the front but the interior is beautiful. I will definitely be coming back to stay again!! Obrigado Independente!

The hostel was top notch. Great atmosphere, great staff, great amenities, and an unbelievable value. A huge BUT, the neighborhood was incredibly loud, with parties and screaming drunk people all night. It was most likely the time of year (early June) but if you like your sleep you'll have a tough time finding it here. Also, the Wild Walkers tours were fantastic, with Ines in particular.

Beautiful hostel, well located, good breakfast and great value for money. The three-level bunk beds are not ideal and my 9-bed dorm only had 6 lockers. But other than that, no complaints.

This hostel is hands down the best hostel I have ever stayed. Everything about the independente is perfect: it's charm, it's location, it's rooms, and most importantly it's staff. My friend and I stayed for 6 nights and by the second day we were treated like family by everybody there. It was a sad day to leave. However, this hostel is reason enough to go back to Lisbon. 110%!!!!!

I wouldn't stay anywhere else. This place was great. One thing that made this place stand out from other hostels I have stayed at was the hospitality of the staff. Manuel, one of the managers, was particularly was very helpful and accomodating which really raised the bar for comparison. The location is great. Right next to Bairro Alto, the Gloria lift and a nice park to have drinks in. The hostel itself was designed very well. I really enjoyed the bar and restaurant as well, not touristy.

Clean and spacious hostel. Staff were friendly and helpful and there was always someone around to answer any questions. Great location for sight seeing during the day and there were some great restaurants and bars right on the doorstep.

I spotted the Independente in the New York Times travel section and knew I had to check it out. The building and location are both stunning, atop one of Lisbon's loveliest hills, in the very hip Barrio Alto. The staff, especially Manuel the Guest Relations Manager, went above and beyond to make sure my friend and I had a great time in Lisbon and I'm very grateful for it! Next time I'm in Lisbon I will definitely be staying in one of their suites.

Everything was perfect except the showers which lack space to leave our stuff.

Best choice for backpackers and young travellers. Very helpful staff and friendly atmosphere. The beautiful miradouro nearby can turn REALLY noisy during saturday nights (it could be quite hard to sleep) but the sight worths it all. A genuine deal.

So... I needed a break from routines in Madrid, and Easter week provided a holiday long enough to go somewhere interesting, with museums, good food, and good music... like Lisbon! The lists and reviews of hostels suggested that The Independente could be a welcoming place for older travelers... and it was. Activities for younger travelers, too. Really helpful, attentive staff. Housed in a beautiful old building with plenty of space and memorable city views.

The Independente was one of the most amazing hostels ever! It has an awesome atmosphere that really cannot be beat in the area. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are incredibly clean. If you are looking for an awesome experience, try the pub crawl offered at the hostel. It's a blast! I highly recommend this hostel to anyone who feels the urge to visit Lisbon, and would definitely stay here again.

We loved this hostel! Loved the dinners and Manuel, one of the managers was great to us-- he sat down with my friend and I for about 40 minutes and mapped out a whole day for us! Despite the rain, we still had a great time and we owe it to you guys! Loved the little common area that everyone hung out in!
