Very cosy, lovely atmosphere, and welcoming and accommodating staff. Small rooms, but that is part of the charm; perfect for a short stay for a solo traveller.

Seriously, if you are traveling alone in NYC you cannot do better than this place. Sure, its a bit more hostel than hotel with a shared bath\shower room, but you will not find another hotel with the history and character for this price anywhere in the area. Even better? FREE BIKE RENTALS!!!! On a lark, I picked one up and rode around the entire island (litrally...around the entire island....on a one speed beach cruiser...with semi-flat tires...) Definitely stay here.
