The hostel is great, and we really liked the bbq. The fact that you also had really hot water in the showers where a great addition. On the negative side, we would like to comment on the " 'free' internet " part. Giving 50 mb for free, and then charging for usage is not what I would call free. If you gave 1.5 gb, (or maybe only 1 gb), I would think it was close to "free" since it would be a normal days usage, but 50 mb is a incredibly low amount of data. to sum up: great hostel except network

The hostel is set out to look like an old boat, looks cool but theres way to much clutter of bits and pieces. Social areas are good however i find it strange the the staff are not allowed to mix with the guests indoors only outside! Not many cooking pans etc. only get 50 mb of wifi a night, its runs out in minutes. Spider webs EVERYWHERE!

I've seldomly encountered such a laid-back host, great guy :). The place is really nice and about 5 min on foot from the waterfront. When you stay upstairs you can see the sea while having breakfast! Kitchen could use a few spices though. Internet: I believe ~50mb free

A nice homely hostel. It can seem a little strict with their rules at times, but that is so that they can maintain their reputation of being a clean, quiet and homely hostel. Kitchen's are very small with limited utensils, so you do have to wait your turn, but that wasn't a problem for us. The view from the balcony was a beautiful sight to sit and eat your breakfast with in the morning.

Stayed in a lot of hostels in the past year and this one is one of the better ones - it's got a cool layout and feels homey.

Short walk from the main centre but no more than 5 mins. Slightly strange building with lots of connecting staircases and corridors but certainly adds to the character. Beds were good and you have your own locker with plenty of plugs etc available. Would certainly stay again.

I enjoyed my stay here, everyone was friendly and respectful of each other's space. It is not a party hostel and the owners are strict about late night noise which is good. The free bikes and free tennis are great. I would recommend staying here and if you like partying head to the Base bar across the road and sleep here!

They had Zenbu Internet which is a pain, global gossip is way better as you pay for unlimited services as opposed to MB usage. 10min walk to shops but there is a convenient store close by but it's super expensive. Friendly staff and is very clean. Close to beach so it's great for jumping into the sea for a quick dip. Kitchens are good too which is a bonus

Really nice hostel, free room upgrade - Nicky was lovely (we didn't speak to Jake) and very helpful. Good facilities, although having a curfew on the upper lounge was great at night, we still got woken up by people banging around the kitchen and going to the bathrooms early in the morning. Other than that we had a nice stay, free bikes were a nice touch for going to the supermarket and the treaty grounds. We would stay here again!

It's a really nice and cozy hostel. Especially the social area invites you to linger and it's a good area to talk with other backpackers from different countries. Only the internet / wifi could be better - per night you have 50 MB free (it's not a lot) and the next 50 MB costs 5 NZD.

Great place, helpful staff, great facilities except for noisy bunks. Location is not the best but the city is so small that it doesn't matter.

An amazingly cute hostel with great decoration in each room and hallway. A few minutes walk to the beach and store, but you can even use their bicycles for free! Staff was incredibly nice (book your Cape Reinga stuff with them!) and there were several kitchens to cook. The beds creaked like absolute absolute hell though - please get new beds, Mousetrap! For the rest you're perfect.
