I unexpectedly ended up traveling with 3 people instead of 2. The Hostel would not let 3 people stay in a private double room. It was a "fire hazard". I am upset at the complete lack of sympathy and customer service. The man at the desk basically didn't care what happened to me and my friends, and didn't try to help us out at all. It's like he knew hostel was popular and didn't care if we stayed their or not. I ended up being charge the $90 for the night even though I didn't stay there.

I reserved a bed in a mixed room for two nights. There was some kind of mistake, overbooking or something. I was moved between three rooms. Constantly checking in and out again. Then when I asked for a towel I was told I had to pay $2. I said that after all their mistakes they can give me this towel for fee. They did. But there was no serious acknowledgment of the messing up on the staff's behalf. The operation seemed unreliable.

In a decent part of Brooklyn, very accessible, and no bunk beds! Showers were also very clean.

Great place best hostel I ever stayed at. Sucks that it's in Brooklyn but just take the 15 minute train into Manhattan and you'll be there.

I actually cancelled my booking. BUT: The communication on my booking as well as my cancellation was EXCELLENT! I always had an answer to my mail on the same day.

I feel for the same amount after taxes I would have been able to stay at an actual hotel which would have been way more comfortble in Brooklyn.

Great Hostel. We were a little bit worried when we got off the subway because it was dark and we were a bit lost but it turned out to be very close to the subway station and the area was really cool with great little bars and lovely pizza in Robertas. Next time I am in New York I will be looking to stay here again!

Great experience. Really loved it. I used the hostel as a convenient place to stay prior to a flight from JFK. Just a few criticisms: the bars on the beds that prevent you from sitting on them--really a big minus (and I mean a seriously negative factor).. It would also help if there were outlets near more of the beds--I had a guy with his laptop plugged into the only outlet, which was a few feet from my bed, and it wasn't so comfortable having him clilcking away there half the night.

Good location and good value for money in NYC, had a few crazies in our dorm room but you can't choose who you share with - comes with the backpacking territory. Dorms were very nice, spacious and clean. Breakfast was a little lack luster, the kitchen was frequently a mess and food would go missing. Besides that, would recommend to friends.

Staff could have been a little more attentive, otherwise it was an excellent stay.

Really nice hostel for the relatively low price of accommodation. Unfortunately breakfast only goes until 9am, however the food provided is a bit unhealthy and not very appealing anyhow. Dorms are spacious and there are little lights above each bed which is helpful when you are trying not to wake other room mates up. Very clean. Staff are friendly. Great neighbourhood. Some great places to eat and drink nearby.

The dorms are very big, which is good, but accommodating up to 16 people per room is probably isn't a good idea. You're lucky if you get good roommates, otherwise it could get so noisy, also it's not so comfortable having to walk across the room just to get to the bathroom everytime and having to disturb people along the way. Also it lacks rooms for communication because of the large number of people. I think this hostel is hip and all, but it does not have what a hostel usually have

I really love this place! I have chosen NYLH for twice and the experience is absolutely wonderful!!! you might think that varet street is pretty far away from everything, but the truth is, the M and J line of subway at Flushing Ave would easily take you to wherever you want to go. The people there really make the experience of living in a hostel worth it! The second time I lived there, I lived in a dorm with eleven foreign backpackers from all around the world and the it was so much fun!
