This place is huge and there are quite a number of working holiday makers stay there. The facilities, other than the PC & wifi connection, are shabby. Some refurbishment works should really be taken to uphold the hostel. We found cockroaches in the room and the washroom......honestly, I don't think this is acceptable! The staff there works hard to keep the place clean, yet, much rooms for improvement on cleanliness. I'll not stay at there again.

Huge hostel w/ a wide range of travellers: from 18-year old first-time-backpackers to 50-year old explorers. Excellent location: close to the train station, near CAT-stations, and in the heart of Perth's cultural center (good for visiting the Fringe or other festivals around).

common room was very comfortable and clean, as the pub and the kitchen but the bedroom was very dirty and stinky. the kitchens were too small for the amount of people, often there wasn't room for storage the food especially in the fridge/freezer. Also i think that 28 dollars for night/person in a 12 mix dorm is too much because there is no facilities.

Hi Alessia, Thanks for coming to stay at the Barracks. Glad to hear you enjoyed the common room, pub and kitchen. We do boast quite a few facilities; two TV rooms, two kitchens, 5 bathrooms, free breakfast, wifi, laundry room, backyard, Foxtel, clean linen, air-con in the 12 bed dorm. Sorry to hear you did not think we had enough. Good luck with the rest of your travels. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

too many people compared to the facilities:the kitchen was dirty and always overcrowded and the same was for the bathroms. We slpet for a few days in a double private room that was ok and then in a dorm that was too small for 6 people and it was very hot during the night.Eventhough the hostel has a nice common room and clean sheets, the general atmosphere was not suitable for people who work or try to find work.If you are looking for a messy atmosphere for your holiday it's ok.wifi 3$/h.

Hi Manuel, I'm disappointed to hear you did not have a good experience at the Barracks. We do offer two different kitchens and 4 bathrooms. As we are a tourist hostel we do not offer our own job search but would have been happy to point you in the direction of a few. Good luck with finding work and with the rest of your travels. Kind Regards, The Old Swan Barracks

Hi Yenny, Thank you for choosing to stay at the Barracks. As we have a laundry service bringing in clean sheets every week I assume you had trouble with your mattress. Since the staff doesn't sleep in the beds, we require your feedback to let us know if there is a problem with your mattress. We would have been more than happy to get a new mattress during your stay. Good luck with the rest of your travels. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

Deposit scheme for plates, cutlery etc is a bit unnecessary in my opinion

Hi Theresa, Thanks for staying at the Barracks. I wouldn't necessarily call the plate deposits a "scheme". As long as plates are washed and returned, the money is given back. As we have had numerous amounts of plates, bowls, cutlery, etc. stolen by guests using them to furnish flats when they move out of the hostel, this is the only way we have of giving ourselves a bit of insurance. It is unfortunate and inconvenient, but is the only way we can help keep these items from being stolen. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

When the hostel first opened in 2003 they were one of the coolest places to hang, now its all gone a little too PC and are trying to cater for far too many categories... horny drunken students is where they excelled! :) still coming there though after over 8 yrs!

Hi Myoung, Thanks for coming to stay at the Barracks. As the building does not have air conditioning, we could have provided more fans if you had asked. Good luck with your travels. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

Pros: Great location, huge chill out area, clean kitchen, friendly staff Cons: smelly room, tiny windows which don't open enough, you have to lent kitchen utensils from reception every time you want to cook... also the management must have their own laminating factory, there's not a single square meter of wall without rules on them..... maybe they are overdoing it a bit.

Hi Johannes, Thanks for choosing to stay with us at the Barracks. We are glad you enjoyed the great hall, clean kitchens, and friendly staff. I'm sorry your room was smelly, but we would have been more than happy to fix the problem and get you another fan if you were hot. You have to lend utensils from reception to cook as we have had huge problems with guests stealing them to furnish their own apartments when they move out. I hope despite some of these factors you enjoyed your stay and will come to the Barracks the next time you are in Perth. Thanks for taking the time to write a response. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team P.S. I can promise we have a few square meters of free wall space!!

Hi Francesco, Thanks for your input. We will look into your suggestions. As we do have wifi available, I'm not sure if you didn't purchase it or if it didn't work for you. If it wasn't working during your stay we would have been more than happy to refund your money or fix the problem. Thanks for choosing to stay with us. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

Even though I checked in there at night, the staff was kind to me. I was able to came into my room easily, it got me relaxed. The best of benefits is that this Backpacker has lockers for traveler to keep their belongings. I liked it.

This is probably one of the best hostels in the area but like everything in Australia it's expensive. I don't like the fact they make you pay a lot for the wifi. It is in a good location and kept clean. They offer good value meals and the facilities are good. Probably one of the best hostels I've stayed at in Australia, not that that's saying too much. I would recommend it!

The backpacker location is perfect! However, the bedrooms are very hot. The staff is friendly, but they are not able to recommend anything like if you are in Perth you must do "...". The night atmosphere at common area is boring. No party, no pub crawl! Laundry is expensive!!! The management has to improve!

Hi Marcio, Thank you for coming to stay at the Barracks. Since we are located in the heart of Northbridge, you are about a 5 minute walk to some of the best pubs and clubs in Perth. I'm sorry if our receptionists couldn't recommend anything for you to do because there are many things you can do around the city. Good luck with your travels. Cheers, The Old Swan Barracks Team

This hostel is absolutely disgusting! Dirty as hell! This is my major complaint. Expensive for what is it, and no air-con in a city that gets bloody hot is an insult!

Hi Nicolo, Sorry to hear you did not enjoy your Barracks experience. We have cleaners on for about 20 hours a day and they work very hard keeping the hostel clean so it is disappointing you thought otherwise. Best of luck on your travels. Kind Regards, The Old Swan Barracks

Real backpacker feeling but it was just too hot in the room - 36 degree outside, felt like 100 in the room, so nobody could sleep

Hello Josef, Thank you for choosing to stay at the Barracks. The Perth heat has been sizzling the past few weeks and we have been trying to keep up by adding more fans in the rooms. We hope that you enjoyed your stay(besides the hot nights!) and good luck with the rest of your travels. Kind Regards, The Old Swan Barracks Crew

I found the staff inefficient and unfriendly, the hostel itself smelled like sweaty feet and my room was coated in dust - it was gross. Which is strange because there are threatening notices everywhere about helping to keep the hostel clean by moving your bags onto your bed in the daytime because "they would hate to hold your luggage hostage in the store room". The breakfast was poor, no milk but they do provide cereal...what's the point? I wouldn't stay here again.
