Phoenix Hostel is a good value for your money. The rooms are basic but very confortable and the location is excellent. Very close to people square by foot and 5 minutes from the subway. Also the place is surrounded by lot of restaurants. The staff helped us to arrange all our trips giving us some advices. But the best of the hostel is the roof bar where you can have breakfast and, in the evening, have some drinks while you meet people all over the world. Definitely I recommend you.

Stayed for one night in a private room with a double bed. Room was clean but mediocre, at best - extremely small, unpleasant lighting, and had a dirty, paint-splattered bench as a bedside stand. That said, the location is great, with lots of restaurants nearby (definitely check out the Yunnan restaurant right across the street - it was our best meal in Shanghai!). Overall, not expensive, but not worth the money - we also stayed at a nearby hostel which was cheaper with much nicer rooms.

Location is great - very close to the French Concession. The Hostel has a small Restaurant with reasonable prices for excellent chinese food. Antother advantage is the rooftop bar, where an always smiling girl makes the best sandwiches I've ever had - go for the breakfast! We would highly recommend this hostel and next time heading for Shanghai we will definetely stay there again.

I got one of the small "special" rooms. And believe me it's only a bed and coat rack and the smallest end table you have ever seen, but it has its own private bathroom and free wifi which is nice. Very close to subway and restaurants eastern and western and easy to take taxi and walking distance to many sights. I would stay here again.

The location is very well which is closed to the people square, but I found cockroach in the bathroom and a little bit disgusting, others are excellent.

The hot water was a challenge. Seemed that we needed to prepare the hot water at least 10 minutes before showering. Some person of the staff are more ready to help than others. Otherwise, the hostel is nicely located, with People's Square close and loads of typical restaurants even closer !

The Phoenix was great! Looked more like a hotel than a hostel. The upstairs bar is a great place to relax and have a cup of tea, and the downstairs restaurant serves great, cheap Chinese food. Cici upstairs makes great breakfast sandwiches, although they aren't included in the room price.

Comfortable and clean rooms, amazing, friendly, helpful staff, Ci Ci and Fly are great people. And you get to pat a big, fluffy, white bunny called Lucky

Staff and bar on terrasse is really nice. Just be patient if you want to order any breakfast here, you'll easily find something better elsewhere for your breakfast.

Very nice hostel, within walking distance of the Bund. Also lots of cool restaurants and stuff nearby. The staff were excellent with Cici deserving of special recognition as she was absolutely outstanding.

Great location, walking distance from People Sq and another metro stop nearer, near restaurants, etc. The roof bar on the 5th floor is a must, with great hostel atmosphere and nice staff there. The room was not too great (window to a 2m wide street, so you could only see a wall), but with enough space though you miss a bit of storage.

Average place to stay, nothing fancy, not too sketchy. The location was perfect and the food around the hostel was amazing. There is this fried dumpling place right down the street on the same side of The Phoenix (It's way better than Mr. Yang's.) you must go there. If you like walking, the bund is about a 25 minute walk and and about the same for night life. Good experience, would recommend it.

A nice hostel with a great location. I really appreciated that the 8 bed dorm had it's own shower! The roof garden is great - unfortunately not many people were staying there while I was around, but I imagine it would amazing fun with more guests. The room was comfortable and clean.

The Pheonix was just average. Not necessarily the cleanest hostel I've stayed at: the bathroom in my room had seen better days, and most of the ceilings were leaking while it rained. The confirmation email I received claimed towels were complimentary however when I asked for one, I was told I would need to pay (the maid had gone home fod the day so I stil wasn't able to have a towel). Not sure if there were mosquitos or spiders in the room, but I woke up with a few bites on my hand and arms.
