i booked a private room and had emailed them my flight time (1400hrs) and details, but was told my room was given away when i got there before 1600hrs. what i didn't appreciate was having the blame pushed on me when they told me they didn't know if i was going to come and that there was no way they could contact me. the people in my dorm were working or studying which makes it hard to sleep in if you're on a holiday. the private room i had was really nice and the bar and bar staff were lovely.

The Phoenix is good located, just two blocks from de subway. We had a problem with the check in because our bedroom was not ready at the check in hour, so we had to wait 3 hours. We asked to the guys from the frontdesk to give us another bedroom to take a shower, luckily they had one. The double bed private room it's big and clean. The wifi works ok in the common areas. The hostel has a beautiful rooftop bar. Xumi and fei fei where really friendly and helpful. Great memories from Shanghai !!!!

Excellent location, you can not be located any better than that! The bar and roof top however missed some variety in food and drinks!

I understand hostels are budget accommodations, but when you have to go across the road and BYO toilet paper then I think that's pushing it. How cheap can you get? The bathroom in the dorm was really mouldy and I didn't want to shower in it. The staff couldn't care less. The one positive thing is that the rooftop bar was very good. It felt like a totally different hostel up there, the bartender was friendly, good atmosphere and clean.

Great hostel, more hotel-standards and therefor great value for money. The staff speaks good english and are extremely helpful! We have stayed there many times and this is our most preferred hostel when being in Shanghai.

In the heart of shanghai. You are close to the subway and to all the main spots in the city. The building is huge and great. Staff is friendly and speaks english. The best place to stay is there!! THE PHOENIX HOURRAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ^o^

Good hostel but please be more generous with toilet paper and add a toilet brush. It's not much and will make everyone's life easier. We had a view on the Pearl Tower, nice! The internet is poor but that's true everywhere in China.

It is a nice place to stay. There are some bakeries, food stores and restaurants in the nearby which is quite nice. The only negative I can mention is that the room was a bit cold but otherwise everything was OK.

After arriving at The Phoenix, we were told that rooms that we previously secured were not available (this at 2 in the morning and after a long journey). My companions and I were tired and were looking forward to a warm room to sleep in. When we finally got to our room, the heating was not working in one of the rooms. The staff expected us to sleep in the cold room and were very unfriendly and unhelpful. The other room had mold all over the bathroom. The pictures on the site are very misleading.

Nice place! We booked a private room, and it was definitely worth the 100 RMB per person. VERY central location, friendly staff who speaks good English, hot shower, clean bathroom... It was great. I can't emphasize enough how great the staff is here. When we were having trouble with the internet, they went out of their way to come up to our room and help us connect. When that didn't work, they let us use an ethernet cable free of charge.

I stayed for 5 nights, in a private room. The staff was very helpfull, and the location is super .. right in a street with one restaurant next to the other and very close to People Square. The toilet did not flush properly at times, but the cleaninglady solved the problem. Wifi connection was good on the 4th floor where my room was. I never figured out how to work the airco properly since the remote was in chinese. Overall, I am happy with my stay and might stay there again.

A great hostel, what you pay for is what you get. Staff are asleep on the job and you have to make a noise to wake them up. They didn't look to please to be woken up. Staff is only a little bit helpful.

Fantastic central location with lots of great restaurants nearby. Staff were friendly and very helpful in answering any questions I had. The rooftop bar is a great place to meet people. Rooms are clean and well serviced. I would definitely recommend others to stay here when in Shanghai.

In a great central location. Easy to walk pretty much anywhere within 10 minutes of the hostel. Compared to all of the other hostels I have stayed in China this was my least favourite in terms of character and style but it was still a decent and cheap place to stay. Definitely worth it for the location alone.

Very nice atmosphere, youth people and comfortable hostel! Location and cleanliness are top! Staff always available and very nice! Just once there has been a noisy neighbor who reminded us that some walls are very thin..

Wi-fi signal was very poor. Room was good. Ubication is good. Nearest subway station is 8 minutes walk. Fly, the chinese guy who attends at the bar upstairs is very friendly.

Staff were helpful and the attached restaurant has yummy local food that bustles at meal times. Location is handy to People's Square and Nanjing Street, and from the People's Square station you can get anywhere in town. Dorm beds are quite hard (even for China), but private room beds are good. Good wireless connections throughout premises.
