Good hotel and great location. Staff was great. The bathroom just had a funky smell coming out but I guess that for 25 dollars a night is worth it!

Staff very friendly with excellent English (and other languages). Great atmosphere in the place, easy to meet people in the rooftop bar or just go for a drink with friends (and drinks not too expensive compared to other hostels in the area).

Even though I had problems with reservation the staff was very helpful. I have booked 2 nights in advance, yet they had no record of my reservation. Regardless, I was immediately offered another room and the problem was solved in no time. The staff was very friendly, helpful and spoke good English. The location of the hostel is perfect for sight seeing; short walk away from Nanjing road and the Bund. Even though the WiFi has very weak signal, there are 2 desktops in the Rooftop bar area.

Hard beds - but to be expected in China! Three bed room is just a two bed room with an extra bed so quite squishy. Friendly and helpful staff. You got what you paid for. Poor internet service.

staff was nice and helpful, room ok and clean, location good! negative: breakfast time was very late - from 9 am to midday. most people looked for breakfast in the bakeries around.

We arrived early check in.Only one of the two beds in the dorm we booked was available, absolutely fine.Hours later,at 2.30pm,the person was still yet to check out.We had paid from midday for that bed.No apologies,no form of refund, asked for a 10yuan map(rip off!)for free to compensate, they just laughed at us,they were totally unhelpful and didn't care.No lock on my locker either, said they would fix, they didn't.Only one staff member,a girl, was lovely, the rest were useless.Beds were rock hard.Bad!

Great Hostel ! Good place in Shanghai (center of all) ! Nice staff ! Nice view from the common area (the bar area is on the 5th floor) ! Good price for the drinks ! Only the beds are hards, but after the first night it will be OK ! The TV in China don't diffuse the rugby matchs, so I must go on Changshu Road (10 mn with the metro) to watch the rugby world cup. I stayed 15 days and I had good time ! Nicodossun

The Phoenix is a good and relatively cheap place to stay in a very central point of Shanghai. Rooms are spotless and the rooftop bar makes up for the fact that this hostel is more like a cheap and clean hotel than a proper youth hostel. The only thing that you need to be aware is that for the same price you can end up either in a room with a window or in a one without it and this makes a huge difference, so make sure you arrange to get a room with a window.

Located in a lively food street this is a great place to stay. Nice location, build in restaurant, very helpful staff, rooms that conquer a hotel, rooftop to hang out in the evening. Can't think of many cons. Maybe its not for you if you're looking for a very quite and laid back place but then... hey it's Shanghai. Actually i was quite surprised it wasnt mentioned in the Lonely Planet. Recommended.

More like a cheap and rather clean hotel than a funky youth hostel, but still a nice and fun place to stay. Good location, cool rooftop bar. Just make sure you ask for a room with a window (it comes for the same price).

This is a good around hostel... excellent location, located on street with many restaraunts, good staff, good internet... it has the potential to be MUCH more... I try to overlook the old carpet in hallways, and bathrooms could be cleaner.

Very, very good budget hotel-like place, just 15 minutes on foot to People Square. Clean and spacious room, wide beds. Highly recommended :) But luggage storage is most expensive in China -10 Y per day :(
