Staff were helpful and the attached restaurant has yummy local food that bustles at meal times. Location is handy to People's Square and Nanjing Street, and from the People's Square station you can get anywhere in town. Dorm beds are quite hard (even for China), but private room beds are good. Good wireless connections throughout premises.

I stayed in a single room with shower and toilette. It was very comfortable. I loved the location; It is in the locally famous gourmet street with many good restaurants and eateries. Unfortunately most of them seem to have only menus written in Chinese, so I recommend you to find someone in dorms who can read Chinese letters, such as tourists from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Japan, and go together for culinary adventure. I miss the noodles in Wufangzhai just on the opposite of the hostel.

We had some problems with the bathroom, anyway our room was always very clean and quite comfortable. The furniture is basic but free internet connection and hot water dispenser are provided. The staff is helpful (they reserved train tickets for us, requiring a 10% commission on the price, which is definitely fair compared to the commissions usually applied by travel agencies). The location is great: just a metro stop from People's Square, in one of the most famous food streets in Shanghai.

This was my first trip to Shanghai, and not only was I glad that I picked Shanghai, I am also glad that I picked the Phoenix Hostel. All of the staff were extremely helpful and over-accommodating, every time I had a question it was answered and answered accurately. Additionally, one of the front desk people, took myself and other hostel guests on a site seeing tour of the city on her day off. Even the bartender was helpful as to where to go, what to see, and do. I cannot recommend them enough!

We stayed at the Phoenix for four nights. The private room was lovely. The shower was hot. They gave us toilet paper and shampoo. The room was cleaned and new towels were given on a daily basis. The location is fantastic and there are lots of nearby eateries. We stayed in a dorm room for the last night. Have no complaints.

The young staff add's to the energy of the hostel. Restaurant downstairs is very convenient! I wish they had more shanghai tour or tourist material available.

Very good urban hostel. A little business hotel-like in some ways, but very comfortable and in a very convenient location very near People's Square. Rooms were comfy and cosy and the staff were pretty helpful. The bar on the top floor seemed nice, but it wasn't heated the morning we tried it. Coupled with a really disappointing breakfast (even by east-Asian hostel standards), that was our only major complaint.

The best of the Poenix is the bar on the roof. It's not easy to find a bar like this in Shanghai. Go in the evening to drink beer and meet internationatl people.

The Phoenix is in a great location for exploring Shanghai on foot, and very close to the metro. My fiance and I stayed for 4 nights at the beginning of our 2 week trip to China, and also one night before flying out. We stayed in a double private room, and then the "luxury" double, and both rooms were clean and basic. Some of the staff - particularly Snow - were extremely helpful. Stay here to be able to walk, eat close, and spend a reasonable amount for a place to sleep. Roof bar also.

Awesome rooftop bar! "Fly" the bartender is the best. And great food in the restaurant downstairs. Watch out for Shanghai girls offering to go for tea with you. its a scam. "Fly" the bartender is the best,

Shanghai is amazing and the Phoenix is a very good place to stay there. The rooms are nice and tidy. The staff is willing to help you every time and the roof top bar is also cool. I would recommend this hostel.

The staff is exceptionally friendly, they are very helpful when inquiring about anything about the city. The bar had a very pleasant atmosphere with great staff. Jack and FeiFei are great people and very exciting and great at pleasing guest and their needs.

We booked a double deluxe room which turned out to be too small. The staff was very accommodating in giving us an alternate room. The food at the restaurant is delicious and very reasonably priced.
