Excellent most helpful staff. Can organise onward travel easily from here.
Stayed in an 8 bed mixed dorm. Immediately impressed with the cleanliness. No complaints about the beds. Air con worked great. I stayed in a nice big room and their are power sockets by everybed and a little shelf. Lockers are basically a wooden cupboard with a fastening to use your OWN PADLOCKS so make sure you bring some. I had none of my stuff stolen so seems to work good enough. Rooftop bar and restaurant downstairs are fantastic. Wish staff were friendlier. Otherwise excellent.
The bar at the Rooftop Garden is very cozy. Tasty breakfast. Best hot chocolate in the entire world!
A fine hotel/hostel with good access to the subway system and very central. Staff particularly in the upstairs rooftop bar are friendly and show an interest in their patrons. Also sell great sandwiches -try the triple deckers -yummy!!
The street the hostel was on had many great small restaurants to choose from!
We booked this hostel 2 months in advance and they did not have our room, they gave us another room. The kid that was asked to take us to our room was not happy about the task. He took us to the room and just pointed at the room and left. The room rate may be low but all the service fees are ridiculous such as booking trains and transportation to the airport The beds had stains on the "clean sheets" the bathroom smelled like urine and had hair in the shower, getting info was like pulling teeth
Nice place to stay. Fresh towels, as well as a clean toilet every day. A bit of a nuisance that the toiletpaper could not be flushed. Nice, cheap food in the restaurant downstairs. A rooftop bar for breakfast and drinks in the evening with really nice staff. Shame it was so hot everywhere. Luckily the rooms have airco. Near to the People's park en shops. In comparison to other hostels the general atmosphere is more Chinese than international.
I would definitely recommend The Phoenix for travelers looking for a soft-landing in Shanghai. They were my first stop on a one-month trip in China, and despite having missing luggage at the airport and the general chaos that is Shanghai, the staff and facilities at the Phoenix put me at ease. Ci Ci and Fly in the top-floor bar were especially helpful. Try the breakfast sandwich meal when you go there. It's delicious and it gives you a solid base for the rest of your day!
Hostel is maybe not the right word to describe this place. The rooms are hotel standard and a good hotel at that. Could have happily stayed there for many more nights. The atmosphere was pretty good hanging out is the roof top bar, however drinks are much cheaper outside. The location is also perfect right next to the metro making everywhere reallyeasy to access. The staff where not as helpful as other hostels I have been do but they were still really nice and friendly. Must Stay!
The bar staff were really friendly and helpful - you feel instantly at home and the hostel is in an excellent location. I'd definitely go back there the next time i was in Shanghai.

I enjoyed my stay at this hostel. The social hostel thingy is really great because of the rooftop bar. At this bar it's really nice to have a chat with other travellers. The bathroom wasn't that clean. Would stay again, nice atmosphere!
More like a hotel than a hostel, common area located on the 5th floor roof along with a bar where the excellent staff looked after you. Rooms were clean and well maintained, the associated restaurant downstairs provided excellent food at good prices. About a 20-minute walk to The Bund and 5 minutes from Dashijie Metro station. Plenty of restaurants and shopping available in the local area. Recommended
Very nice hostel located close to people square and the metro. The bar at the top is amazing to enjoy a warm evening with music and beers
Great, great place to stay.....we've stayed in other hostels in Shanghai...lots of small shops around it where you don't have to be rich to buy things......we won't stay anywhere else. Such friendly staff.......
Had a great stay at The Phoenix! The staff was very friendly and helpfull, Fly and Cici are awesome. The room was clean, bathroom could have been better but the shower was nice. The Phoenix does not supply towels and toiletpaper in the dorms. Not sure about the single rooms. The rooftop is great! I met so many nice people there! The breakfast they serve is really good, amazing sandwich! I'd recommend this hostel!

Good value for your money, the staff was always helpful and the location is optimal. The rooftop bar is the highlight. Even though the rooms are clean, expect some bugs here and there.
Was clean and great location. Short walk to people's square train station and East Nanjing road. Staff spoke great English and were very helpful.
The staff was GREAT! Especially the guys (/girl) running the rooftop bar. Fantastic breakfast and really relaxed atmosphere; grab a beer from the fridge and pay when you feel like it. Pay respect to the cutest bunny ever, Lucky, who lives on the roof. The 24/7 staff in the reception are also amazing. Good english skills, and very service-minded, regardless the time of day/night. Good place to meet other friendly travellers! The bathroom facilities leaves a lot to wish for. Only downside though
Location is excellent in the French Concession and right around the corner from Peoples square. Staff were friendly, especially the Bar staff. Bar has potential to provide for a really good atmosphere with the right group. Wasn't overly clean, though not unbearable. No Guest Kitchen, but there is a restaurant on the ground floors and plenty of others in the surrounding district.
