One of the worst hostels during my 6-hostel trip. The night staff barely spoke english and were not helpful in dealing with a cab driver, who took me for a bit of a ride and was asking too much money. Would not book a shuttle from the airport for me, forcing me into the 50min taxi cue. Also, could not book bus tickets ahead of my arrival. The hostel itself is ok, but the services and staff definitely need to be improved.

The location is perfect which very near to train station n the bund for exploring. The bar is just nice for chilling with variety of drinks for selection.

Great hostel the newly renovated private rooms upstairs are great. Good location, bar upstairs is very expensive though

The bathroom could be cleaned better.

Great Hostel! Keep up the good work :) No complaints at all.

Excellent hostel. If you don't mind a little more traffic, go for the 8 bedrooms dorms on the 3rd floor versus the more expensive 6 bedroom dorms on the 4th floor as they have more space per person, larger lockers and larger bathrooms. Pros: central location for visiting sites, on a good food street, desk staff are very helpful, easy to meet people on the rooftop patio (solo traveller), clean rooms Cons: you can't bring outside alcohol to the rooftop bar, which is not the norm in China

I stayed in this hostel for two weeks in March 2015 and the overall experience was very good. The location is conveniently next to Dashijie Line 8 and also near People's Square. The sheets are not changed until you check out but the room floors and restrooms are cleaned. It was convenient having restrooms in the rooms, the bar on the top floor and the restaurant on the first floor. Great prices and atmosphere, and very helpful staff. I'd definitely stay here again!

Great hostel. Highly rated dumpling restaurant attached, which is worth paying a visit. Nice rooftop bar which did great breakfast sandwiches. Lacked a bit of an atmosphere up there, but we were there in the off season. Subway is just around the corner so easy to get around. Can walk to most of the major attractions of Shanghai. Used the airport pickup service which was great value and saved us worrying about finding our way there. Free lockers, and keycard needed to access lift so very secure.

This hostel was wonderful and in a great location, very close to peoples square. It was too bad there wasn't more going on in the bar but the staff was very helpful and the rooms were big and clean. I haven't stayed at a better hostel.

Great location...easy to find...metro nearby and some sightseeing spots on foot available...recommend!!!!

Phoenix hostel was in a very convenient location. We were able to navigate our way around Shanghai's tourist spots by foot. It was a lovely experience in all. I especially enjoyed the 'Dong Di Bi' ice-cream they served on the rooftop cafe.

Good location, near a subway stop, and within walking distance of a lot of sights. Lots of atmospheric food stalls/shops right nearby. The staff are super-helpful (thank you!) -- so great if you need help with onward travel. The one thing I did not like so much is that the common area on the first floor is crowded with customers from the restaurant downstairs -- yes there is a nice rooftop terrace, but when it's too rainy or cold up there, there's not really anywhere comfortable to sit.

Good location with everything you need provided. Our room was similar to a hotel room, only drawback would be the glass walled bathrooms don't give you much privacy from the room, so might be something to consider if you're not a couple. Tip: the restaurant downstairs has great food and cheap beer.

This was the best hostel I stayed at in China. Pro: the dorms are very big, you can put your entire backpack into the lockers they are huge, the rooftop bar is a great place to meet people, the location was great, very clean and inviting Cons: the wifi was not very good

Great Place and Good Staff !!! Take some informations from the reception when you get The Phoenix Hostel, you should have good advices to visit the city ! The dormitory is clean and the restaurant on the bottom of the hostel is very good and cheap ! Enjoy !!!

Mattress (more like mat) very thin and hard, but apart from that everything was fine. Clean bed and bathroom, room big enough, spacious locker, location easy to reach - didn't really need anything more for my very short stay and the price is excellent.

The dorm is really nice, and the wifi router is in the room so means pretty good internet connection. The shower is fantastic. I dislike the 100rmb key deposit, which costs the same as about 2 nights stay in a dorm. Also, the toilet paper was not replaced once in two days, I had to go to reception to get it, and then walk through the busy restaurant to get to the lift while visibly holding the toilet paper. The luggage storage is not secure, it is an unlocked door, and the free map is not good.

The room was big! But the bathroom had a terrible smell from the drain!
