Walking distance from both the old town and the mariscal (although you definately need a taxi to go anywhere at night). Rooftop terrace with great breakfasts and the possibility to have dinner on one long table is good for meeting new people.Walking distance from both the old town and the mariscal (although you definately need a taxi to go anywhere at night). I think the people that said this place was ´cliquey´ are wrong, or maybe they encountered a weird bunch as we found the Secret Garden really fun and friendly! I stayed in the dorm right near the roof terrace but the noise was not a problem, just bring earplugs and it closes at 11pm anyway. The staff are helpful and there is always someone around to chat to - it´s definitely recommended.I think the people that said this place was ´cliquey´ are wrong, or maybe they encountered a weird bunch as we found the Secret Garden really fun and friendly! Stayed there twice now, but this second time it wasn´t that great. The staff are a bit cliquey and not that organised (mainly as it´s randoms working there for a nights sleep). The bathroom this time smelt a lot, enough to make me gag. The room door wouldn´t lock properly. Lots of noise and music at night from weird people. And finally they tried not to take off the hostelworld discount.Stayed there twice now, but this second time it wasn´t that great. [+] Nice building, great terrace views, great but $$$ meals.
[-] After 5 months in S.A., the most cliquey hostel I (and several others) have stayed at. Most 'volunteer' staff spend time choosing music or comparing how drunk they got or how long/far/hard they've travelled rather than making sure there's enough coffee & cutlery at breakfast.
Generally quite 'in or out' atmosphere, loud music on terrace means not a place to sit and relax.[+] Nice building, great terrace views, great but $$$ meals.

The only thing I didn't like was the amount of traffic coming in and out right next to the rooms in the wee hours of the morning. People were very loud almost all night; even my earplugs didn't block out the noise. The rooms were clean, they had good meals and good prices, and they were great at helping me get settled into my room and showing me around. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of traffic coming in and out right next to the rooms in the wee hours of the morning.
