Great value for the price! I've paid so much more at other hostels and gotten half the service I received here. If you're accustomed to being an independent traveler and don't plan to just sit around inside all day, then the Thumbs Up Hostel is right for you. They've got plenty of information of everything there is to do in Budapest, and the location is away from the more touristy area, so it's easy to find great places to eat on a small budget-great Asian food down the street at 4 euro/plate!

I read the other average reviews but still chose this hostel because of the perfect location. It turned out to be a totally different experience. The staff are actually here to have fun with you, not just to give directions. They even walked me to Szimpla bar to have a beer. I had to leave in the middle of next day but they let me checkout later without problem. I understand that some people may feel theres "too much freedom" here, but thats what i liked : i felt like part of a family.

I really don't recommend to stay here. The hostel is dirty, rubbish was everywere. Tha staff is also quite strange.

I really appreciated the location (it's perfect) and the fact that we could check out late in the morning (thank you)...but definitely that's not the way to handle a hostel like that. They don't have employees and the place is dirty. The door is always open even at night with no one at the reception. The owner disappeared after two days leaving the place in the hands of a friend of his (he doesn't work there,he simply lives there).

Absolutely fantastic place to stay if you are seeking fun, drinking and meeting alot of good people! Easy to find and very welcoming with good facilities! Book here!

I liked the staff very much. They were very helping and friendly.

Not a good experience, it was very dirty and I was the only person in the hostel, so there was no way to meet other people. The owner is nice but he's distracted with another business of his so isn't really running the hostel well.

Great hostel, Mike is a great dude, location is top notch, szimpla, instant and everything else is just around the corner.

The manager was not much help and had issues with drinking all day

Good location but the manager has no concept on how to run a hostel. The hostel has recently changed owners so most of the good reviews were left when the previous owner was in charge. Only saving grace was Ryan who was helpful in getting us things and telling us about the city.

Great location, middle of town, still quiet for a good night sleep.

Thumbs Up was great! Mike was unbelievably helpful and accommodating to my group. He made great suggestions and was extremely insightful about Budapest. The hostel offers a fun, hospitable atmosphere at a great price! I highly recommend staying here.

Maaaan! This hostel is awesome. The staff is incredibly cool, and took me all over town. In return I learned them to fingerwhip! Staying at the hostel is like staying at your friends place. Good music, drinks and always something going on. Besides that, the hostel is very centrally located. Its close to all the cultural sights as well as all the cool party places in Budapest. I would advise this place to all the the people who are looking for a relaxed, well priced and just COOL place to stay!

Great location - easy to get to all the bars and really friendly staff who helped us with everything we needed for our stay, which was too short. Will definitely come back:)

The staff is awesome, they would go the extra mile for you when it comes to keeping their guests enjoying the city. They'll show you the best party scenes, or the best tourist attractions, or even museums if your the geeky kind. They will accompany you to the best night life spots. The owner, Mike Dammann took us bar crawl and because he was with us, the bars gave us a nice discount! Super friendly staff! :)

Wow, what a fantastic hostel! Had so much fun staying here. So much so that I am coming back in October to explore some more. Such a relaxed, friendly home from home and Mike is so helpful with tips and ideas of what to see and do in the city. Highly recommend to anyone! Thanks.

Thumbs up is an amazing place to stay. Great location, nice facilities and fantastic staff! Really easy going and friendly environment. Walking distance from pretty much everything at an amazing price, definitely value for money
