This hostel has a fabulous location with terrific views of the lake and the building seems to be well maintained. As new travelers in NZ, we learned a difficult lesson here. We arrived in Taupo on the late bus (1 am) and even though that was indicated on my hostelworld.com reservation, we didn't call ahead to make arrangements for getting the key. Since the hostel is family operated, the reception desk closes at 8 pm and we were stuck without housing in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, we are unable to operate a 24hr reception. For this reason we ensure it's clearly stated on hostelworld and all other booking sites, that we require guests arriving outside reception hours (8.30pm) to contact us to "arrange a late check in" to ensure they can enter after hours. Guests using overnight buses in NZ should check booking details thoroughly and confirm with hostels Re: late entry requirements. We did offer the guest an extra free night and provided free WIFI.

Nice hostel with a good kitchen, and nice rooms. There were only 2 plug sockets in my room for 7, which isn't really enough, but it wasn't much of a problem when I was staying there surprisingly. The security door downstairs means that you can't hang around after you check out at 10am, which is a bit weird, but not a big deal. There is free luggage storage.

Thanks for choosing to stay with us. We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels around our fantastic country. I'm not sure why the original building designers/planners didn't allow for more plug sockets in the rooms - maybe something to do with some sort of safety regulations???? When we took over management of the lodge we did try to get more put in but apparently we can't... we may have to look at getting some multi boxes... Our security door situation may seem weird but having a hostel where anyone walking off the street can just enter your communal areas seems even weirder to us - previously anyone could just wander upstairs and help themselves to guests food etc so we adopted the current security set up in the best interest of our guests.

Very good hostel, I've only marked it down as we were unable to even sit in the hostel after checkout at 10AM... this is not normally the case and you can still have access to the toilets etc... I probably would stay here again, I would just make sure I can leave at 10AM next time...

Thanks for the positive comments - would just like to clarify re: check out times and use of facilities after check out. Some hostels have no control over who can access their communal areas due to their layout (i.e ground level - easy to walk in sites) - which may put guest safety and security at risk. Therefore guests can be under the illusion that this is the "normal" way things operate...(when in fact the hostel operates in the only way it can...) Our communal areas and rooms are located upstairs and key access is required at all times. Once checkout is completed the guest no longer has a key to access these areas (including the facilities) - which makes us a "little different" by operating in a way that is "not normally the case". Motels don't allow access to facilities once you check out and we operate in the same manner ( a decision that wasn't made lightly and was made due to prior experiences/incidents and abuses we have incurred as a result). We are not unreasonable and often do allow those waiting for buses into the communal areas to wait as well as let checked out guests briefly use toilets (outside of cleaning hours) however our staff are not "doormen" and shouldn't be expected to unlock doors all day. Also we do offer FREE luggage storage and there are plenty of cafes nearby, the lakefront, library etc where people can sit during the day and the town operates plenty of toilet facilities also.

Good hostel overall. My bed was thin and lumpy and I could feel the slats on the bed digging into me. There were no lockers so the security of your stuff depends on the people in your room. The managers were really friendly and helpful and the place had a good vibe.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Hey there...hopefully you informed the office staff re: the bed slats so that we can look into it more - otherwise there isn't much we can do about it.. Security box is available in reception - we don't include lockers in the rooms due to hygiene reasons. Hopefully we will see you back again sometime...
