It's a good place for those who want to save money. The staff is great and you can know a lot of different people, but the building is old and somethings don't work properly.

The location is great, it's very close to everything, public transport gets you around fine (airport too). There's not much going on in the hostel, very little activities organized. The staff treated me great, ended up going out with some of them. The common space kind of sucks, small, just a table. No games, etc. Anyway, i guess space is hard in NY. bed was fine, room was fine, free toothpaste was good.

All staff was absolutely perfect. Though it's a little bit messy and quiet noisy, regarding its price, it was comfortable enough

Close to a subway station and a few blocks walk from Central Park, the hostel is in a convenient location. The room I stayed in was uncomfortably hot and humid at night.

Not recommended for long stays. The bed bugs can be a problem, so make sure you sleep with your clothes or pyjamas on. It's a fine place to stay for a few days. Also very cramped up, the sink is small and there's no mirror above it in some rooms, so that makes it hard to have a shave. But definitely reasonably priced for New York.

Worst hosteling experience thus far. Overcharged me and then charged me a week later on my credit card after I'd already left for no apparent reason which I had to dispute with the credit card company. Very friendly and helpful staff for the most part, but rooms smell like feet and are very cramped. Some of the bathrooms are very small as well. I would never stay here again. The inconvenience it has caused me was not worth the money I saved.

If you're travelling as a pair, you're better of choosing a hotel like the more central Park Savoy. The price is the same, but the hotel is far more comfy than the Hostel's Twin Private Ensuite. The twin bed was a bunk bed - could live with that, but.. Inside the restroom we noticed a major tool which should help if the toilet couldn't flush out. And as we expected, there was a good reason that the tool was there.... The radiator was heating uncontrolled at max-level - sauna-like conditions.

Interesting place for sure. I like the little specialties, like pizza night or movies. The only setbacks were bed that are too short (I'm tall, I know, but still) and absolutely terrible doors that need to be greased (terrible creaking all night) and through which you can hear everything - especially when the shower and toilet and main entrance with hallway are all actually up to three steps away from your bed...I didn't really sleep much, even with earplugs.

I don't normally write these, but I think it's worth it for Tone on Lex. Firstly, I stayed in two different rooms over the two nights I was there and I found both staff and guests to be friendly and entertaining; and there where no bed bugs! (a concern from a lot of the other reviews). The location is great too, in uptown with real new york character. The rooms/bathrooms aren't large, and it's worth bringing and extra blanket, but i thoroughly enjoyed my time there, esp. for the price!

Friendly and helpful staff. Very nice ambience. Hostel was mostly clean except for many cockroaches inside our room lockers. Tone on Lex's policy of "no food consumed or stored in dormitory" must be better enforced if the insect issue is to be controlled. Infestation of this kind is unacceptable. Showers and toilet areas are extremely cramped. Otherwise good experience. Please advise Hostelworld that check in is at 3pm and not 11am. They are giving wrong information in their web site.

It is quiet, clean and ideal location to travel within nyc and the metro station is just within 5 mins walking and walking distance to central park.

insanely clean, extremely safe location on the upper east side, people who work there are nice, cool decorations on the inside-artwork on the walls ect.-they have hot water&breakfast and for around 26$ a night you will definitely not find a better deal on hostels in nyc especially for how clean&nice it is inside

I stayed with a friend for just a weekend visit. The hostel is not far away from the central park and also only one block away from the next metro station. The small house has no name on it, so it is not easy to find. You have to take the house number with you. We came a later to the hostel because of snow... But it didn't matter! There is somebody there for 24 hours, so you can come when you want to :) The staff was very friendly! good hostel - > we will come again!

This is still, this far north in Manahattan, Woody Allen territory - meaning, almost like "Midnight in Paris". The trees are Parisian, the neighbors are primed for conversation - Harlem is still past East 96th Street. A big modern DR Pharmacy is caddy-corner across from Tone on Lex, on 3rd Avenue, open 24 hours and, unlike Paris, even has an ample beer frig. If you arrive past midnight on Virgin Atlantic late from London with just a US $5, that store has Foster's - and Tone on Lex takes Visa.

The staff were awesome, the atmosphere was great... only downer was the bed bugs but I wont hold it against them, they sterilised daily and did the best they could to get rid of those cheeky critters

No storage room, rooms are really small, no activities offered....! It´s a place to sleep and not more.

Owner Comment (Show)
The dorms may seem small due to guests luggage being in the dorms as well. We are remorseful that you did not find any activities. We do offer activities to our guests everyday of the week. They are posted up in the message board every morning and announcements are made every afternoon.
