Ok if you need an inexpensive place to stay in Colombo. Located far from downtown Colombo, but unless you have any business there it's not really a problem as Mt Lavinia is quite a nice area. Room was clean with AC and good wifi.

GREAT hostel! incredibly friendly and helpful staff, nice rooms, good wifi, good restaurant. However, if you book a tour with them, make sure you clarify what exactly is included in the price you pay. We bought a tour for $280 and had to pay for all of the tickets and entry fees into the places we stopped at. Otherwise, everyone was helpful and we had a great stay. We definitely recommend this hostel!

Good location, good value though the best part of the stay was the people. Couldn't find a nicer group of guys to take care of you. Its also right next to the public bus stop which will take you down to the southern beaches for a dollar.

Great place to stay in Mt Lavinia! Would stay again in a heartbeat. Great facilities, AMAZING chef. I recommend the Prawn and squid curry. Just divine for Rs300. A lot cheaper than down at the beach. Have a beer down there then head back for dinner. Great wifi. Great A/C. Great big room size. All in all a pleasant experience. Don't let the distance to Colombo keep you away, trains run every 30 mins, cost Rs15, and take only 30 mins. Easy peasey. Thanks Tropic Inn!

Nice budget hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Bathroom was clean and well eqipped. Rooms can be a bit noisy due to water pressure pumps. Location is very close to the beach with access to quite a few beach bars and restaurants. Small breakfast buffet with a mix of Sri Lankan and western dishes. Free WiFi worked like a charm. If you stay there and like seafood, make sure to check out restaurant Bu Ba on the beach opposite the Mt Lavania train station (you need to cross the tracks).

The worst experience I've ever made in a foreign country!!! A very good Sri Lankan friend who we know for a very long time, picked us up at the airport. Arriving at Tropic Inn, we wanted to put our luggage on the room and refresh before starting to town. The staff did not allow our friend to join us because he was a local. We couldn' believe it! The hotel is discriminating their own people. Disgusting!!! Shocking!!! Racists!!! We canceled the reservation and booked another hotel.

Owner Comment (Show)
As a safety concern we do not allow non guests to go to the rooms. If our guests need help in carrying their luggage to their rooms, our staff will be happy to help. If we let non guest to go to the rooms it creates a SECURITY problem. If you want to entertain your guest, you are very welcome to use our lobby area or the restaurant at the hotel. Thank you. Management Tropic Inn.

I can't actually comment on the hotel, they were full so when we checked in after traveling all day they put us across the road in what I can only describe as a finished garage. It was owned by the hotel owners, a bit dark but clean and had hot water. The hotel did have a decent free breakfast and the staff were helpful. We were just a little disappointed because we were expecting a hotel room. It seems, is, a bit far from Colombo but the tuk tuk's are so cheap it doesn't really matter.

The Tropic Inn is not actually in Colombo, but situated in the Southern suburb of Mount Lavinia. It is handily located for the beach however, and sits near the arterial Galle road, making access to Colombo fairly straightforward. The Inn itself has seen better days, but the staff are friendly and welcoming and the rooms comfortable and well appointed.

This is one of the best hostel locations in Colombo area. During the rush hours, around 8am and 6pm-8pm, it will take longer to get there. It is walking distace to the beach and some of the best sea food resturants in the area. Shopping is only a 15min tuk tuk drive (no more than 150 rupee, 2012) and the port is very close by as well. The staff are very friendly and thoughful. Rooms are clean, has A/C and a fan, maintaned very well. Time we did spend there we had a great time :)
