Great hostel with activities going on every night. If you're traveling alone, there's definitely plenty of opportunities for making new friends. Clean rooms, nice with slightly isolated bunk beds which gave some privacy, staff were very knowledgable about the area and the town. The only downside I can think of is that it's marginally pricier than other hostels - but in my eyes those few extra bucks were definitely worth it.

thanks so much for your kind words! And for supporting our slightly higher prices. You definitely get what you pay for in San Francisco and with our newly renovated public spaces, expanded breakfast, large lounge, library, theatre and yoga studio, we think we offer more than anyone else! Happy Travels.

The location is a little sketchy, it is in downtown not the safest place.

It's unfortunate that you did not feel secure in our neighborhood. Lower Knob Hill, where we are located, is comfortable for most people. But everyone has their own level of comfort and San Francisco is a big city. We are surrounded by several high end hotels and a Marriott is being built next door, so for most people, the area is comfortable.

We booked a group dorm for 4 - room 310, now notoriously known as the haunted room, as we sometimes had an empty bed, ie a ghost :) Was really funny with the receptionists trying to figure out what happened and why people are checking in and out, but a ghost remained...What was even greater - the whole cheerful gang at the hostel would approach us as friends or just to take us around SF. Tidy and quite (even at night), one could find friends to play games with or simply chat 24/7. RETURNING!

It was a good location and fun atmosphere. However, it is lame that even at $50 a night you have to make your own bed. The pillow is so flat it is essentially useless. Also, in the 4 days we were there I don't think our room had been cleaned. If you are simply looking for a place to sleep, this is it, but not much more.

We regret that you did not find all aspects of your stay enjoyable. We agree on the pillows and have a bunch of new ones on order now. It's fairly common for people to make their own beds in dorms and we feel our higher price is for the greater value we provide with free walking tours, free wine and cheese night, lots of activities, a newly renovated hostel with a large lounge, library, theatre and now a new yoga studio. We also have friendly staff and try hard to make each guest feel welcome

The staff were friendly and helpful. There was always something going on at the hostel. The building was every secure. I felt safe in the rooms and in the main areas.

Everything was truly perfect, except that huge insect walking on the breakfast table...

The hostel was in a great location. Very big and clean, and plenty of events done through the hostel. If you're looking for a quieter stay, don't stay here. Rooms on the street side very loud. Otherwise perfect for one day in San Francisco and seeing the sites!

Fun hostel with great common facilities but the beds are hard and rooms near stairs are noisy. Check-out could be later.

Good location to start your day and full equipped kitchen to save your bucks.

The location was convenient and seemed fairly safe. I arrived late at night and walked alone from Market without any problems. The dorm with ensuite bathroom was nice. I really liked the privacy pod with outlets and light, although the mirror on the wall kind of negated the privacy aspect. I also liked the common/breakfast area downstairs, and the little cards with directions to different attractions.

Great stay here! Fantastic environment, plenty of interaction and events to meet people. Staff were a little rude but no more than your usual grumpy worker. Facilities were good, soap was often out. Location is central but the hills are killers and its verging on Tenderloin region. Pretty good value for the experience but would have liked a little more for my money.

Hi, thanks for your comments. We're glad you liked your stay overall and we'll find out what's making some staff grumpy and fix that! Perhaps we'll have to cut back on their going out on the hostel pub crawl...

Location was great, 5 minutes walk to Market street and next Bart stop. We booked a double room which with a nice and clean bathroom. Staff did not seem to pay much attention what happened around them and the kitchen was sort of greasy. The free pan cakes are an awesome idea - unfortunately they taste more like dry bread than anything else.
