On first sight Urban Guesthouse seems very basic, hostel style. But in 'The Loft' you actually have a TV with DVD player, movies, loudspeakers... - it was a great room. With it's 4 rooms the atmosphere is really familiar. The owners - 2 Italian guys are the best hosts I ever found in a hostel/hotel. Always friendly and they know 'everything' about the island and are happy to share this knowledge with you. Also the kitchen is very tasty and cooked by the owner right in front of you.

The young owners were excellent - couldn't have been more helpful or nicer. Great value for money. Position is perfect for the hustle and bustle of Chaweng and the beach. Downside, as others have said, is the current building site next door, and there were a couple of details that really needed fixing in our room - leaking a/c, shower water heater not working. For my taste the some of the loud music in the cafe was wearing. I'm sure others like it, though.

Lock boxes in rooms would be good to have

We got a basic twin fan room and were really happy with the location and staff. However, the room was unbearably hot without AC. I would not recommend this room unless you have a very high tolerance for heat. Other than that, very clean and good atmosphere.

You would be hard pressed to find a better value than Urban Guesthouse. Wonderful staff was extremely responsive to our needs. The food is excellent. With the owners being from Italy we enjoyed excellent homemade Italian pastas (try the lasagna) and cakes; which after 3 weeks of Thai food was a nice change of pace! Just around the corner from a beautiful stretch of beach and within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants of Chaweng! Would definitely recommend!!!

Small hostel with a lot of character. Run by two young Italian guys who are super nice and great hosts. You can't beat the location for the price. Literally 2 minutes to the beach and you could rent a beach chair at the beach entrance. Only complaint would be that there is construction going on next door which can be loud, but it is not the fault of the hostel and can't be helped. If you are on a budget and want the beach, this is a great place to stay!

I like this place, It is 2 meters from the shopping street. I could just sit on the balcony of the restaurant and talk to people walking by. And about 5 min walk to the beach. Not to mention they run a restaurant with tasty Italian and Thai food. The staff are really great. I am glad we became friends with no time not even ice-breaking needed. If I got there again I would stay there for sure.

Brilliant stay here! Highlights: 1. The restaurant, We've come to Thailand from Rome and the food really does meet up to the Italian standard! 2. Location is spot on. Right near the beach, restaurants, shops and bars but quiet enough to get a good nights sleep. 3. Our room had a DVD player, perfect chance to watch the cheap knockoffs we got whilst in Koh Samui! 4. Lovely staff :) Only bad thing I'd say is the shower wasn't that poweful.

Had an amazing week here in koh samai. Urban staff made us very welcome with amazing fresh home cooked food. Beach bars and nightlife all within 2 mins. Rooms very basic but clean and good value compared to others

This place is very nice. the home cooked meals here are to die for. the owners are pretty nice as well...felt really comfortable here

This place is definitely value for money, clean

Great hostel, had the 3 bed room which was fantastic value, clean and spacious. Bathroom next door was kept clean, shower was more cool than warm but great after a hot day in the sun. Beach is 3 min walk, and is beautiful!! Staff are excellent, friendly and helpful...the food they cook is fantastic too so eating there is a must. Only downside is the construction work next door which is 8am till about 6/7pm and will be happening for at least 1 more year :-/ So get earplugs and you'll be fine!

The rooms were spacious and were well equipped. Good value for money. Helpful in booking our transport to koh phagnan... however after stressing we needed thong Sala... he still booked the wrong ferry. His heart is in the right place though..

Slight difficultly finding hostel however after overcoming this the hostel is in a great location ! Very close to beach and very close to night life without being noisy . Rooms very basic but everything you need . Great aircon!! Very clean ! Great little social area / cafe down stairs . Staff very friendly and helpful !

this hostel is run by two very friendly Italian lads, the location is great and excellent value for money.

We had a fantastic stay! The two owners are lovely and very welcoming. The room and shared bathroom was always clean. The food is amazing, proper Italian pasta. Great location, less than 5 mins from the beach and 10 mins walk to the main bars. The guest house reception does not open until 10am so just be aware and do not get a flight that gets in at 8am because you will have to wait for a while. Hostel world does not tell you this. Not a major issue though. We would definitely stay again!

Great place. Nice management who really do their best to make you experience more enjoyable. I dont agree with the review below, come on, this is not a Ritz 5 stars hotel, just leave your key when you go as usual in hostels. Best italian food in town at very low pice.

Friendly staff and good location. Real hand-made Italian pasta available with 10% discount at the restaurant downstairs. The room was simple but amply sufficient for us backpackers. Too bad there was a construction site right in front of our window (noisy). Also wish the hot water heater was fixed. Overall and excellent stay.
