this is not the most luxury accommodation ever but definitely a great location, friendly and helpful staff and a good vibe around the place. I'd highly recommend this as a base for exploring Bishkek and planning your journey through Kyrgyzstan.
Batyr was a great host. He even accompanied us to an Ashkana the first night and was so super-helpful with all the info about Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan. He made a couple of calls to organize a trip to the Ala Archa national park (mountainside). It was great!

This was a great hostel to stay at. The USSR feel is with a light touch, so don't get hopes up too high ;-). The directions given by the hostel made it easy to find. The host was always available, spoke excellent English, and was very helpful for any questions we had. If the hostel was full, there could be quite a wait for the single shower, but I think the same problem would affect all the apartment hostels.
I had a great time while staying at USSR hostel for more than a week. The staff/owners are excellent and were extremely helpful during my time in Bishkek, which is really important to me because it's not easy to be a solo traveler who doesn't speak Russian/Kyrgyz. The staff went out of their way many times to help and ensure that I was comfortable and having fun, etc. I've stayed at other hostels in this city but this one is DEFINITELY the best place for its value. Will stay here again!
