We spend a good time there. The room was a little bit small but we used it only for sleeping. The location is great and so was the price. So, I would return if I go to New York again :)

Nothing can compensate for the pathetic attitude of the front desk staff. They do not deserve their jobs. They are extremely unhelpful, rude, lazy, bad attitude individuals one could encounter. This spoils the experience before you even start out.Fire them and get people that really want to make a difference.Shame on management. They have certainly been aware of this problem for ages, but nothing improves.

The bedroom was small, but clean and well furnished. For 2 friends sightseeing it was ideal. The Bathroom facilities were not so pleasant, and we found ourselves shocked that there was a window looking into the shower in the ladies's bathroom. Each day we went to the gym facilities to shower, and these could have been more private also. Generally, everything else was perfect. Accommodating staff, good gym facilities and an excellent price for it's very central location.

Our room light didn't work and nobody cared, not working heater and unsealed windows made it impossible to sleep tight when its winter!

The room was really small, but clean with 2 bunk beds, which my friend and I shared. Some more circulation space would have been nice, but we liked that we could lock our room when we went out. There was no closet to keep our stuff. My major problem was that they didn't give us 2 keys, so I got locked out when my friend wasn't around. Also the ladies room used a card key to open, which they didn't give us, so I had to wait for someone to open it for me. :( Also I had to request for blankets.

Check-in late night was easy, with courtesy. Bath and bedroom were clean, however, city construction noises can be an annoyance. Nice and easy walk to Grand Central for #1 subway line. Enjoyed my 2nd visit!

To all visitors: Don't forget your earplugs! :-) The rest was fine: Very good location for little money!

It is very clean, offers bright white towels and soap, & the water is hot. Athough the rooms do not look too modern, the furniture is in very good condition. I actually moved my reservation from Vanderbuilt to West Side YMCA because it was closer to Lincoln Center. It is also next to Central Park, so great! It is a little difficult to get through the lines to change from one hostel to another (the website does not always work), but the staff is very helpful & polite.

a semi-private bath means share with many others in the hall, not with the room next door. The heating system pipes were banging loudly often during the night. The lighting in the room was so bad, that reading was not an option. Most others sat on the floor in the hall ways in order to read,. No lounge, no kitchen, no sense of community. This is basically a room without hostel amenities.

Loved the gym, loved being around people from all over the world. I felt safe there in my tiny room. Radiator was noisy, but the walls were thick and I didn't hear people in other rooms. Wi-fi was not avaiable often. When I left my room and the key card inside, I called the front desk and was told I had to come down to get a new key. Then the security guard who unlocked my door said that the front desk should have sent security up there instead of me having to come down in my pajamas.

The rooms are tiny and it's not the cleanest place I've aver stayed in but it is great value for money. The hostel is very well located, 5-10mn walk to Grand Central Terminal and within walking distance to metro, buses and trains. If I go back to New-York, I'll definitly stay there again.

good location. rooms are very ver small and the fact that you have to use a key card to get into the communal bathrooms at the end of the hall is quite annoying!! staff are very friendly and they do their best but the rooms are old and my upper bunk bed didn't have a safety railing to prevent me from rolling off, onto the floor nor did it have a step ladder to get up there in the first incident. you have to pay $1 to store bags on the last day - which is fair enough and wifi only works in lobby

I spent 8 days in NYC and stayed at the "Y". Staff were friendly, helpful and always courteous. The location, for the price, is the best in the City.

It is not okay that the cleaning lady keeps knocking on the door from 8 am to 10 am on check out-day. We couldn't sleep cause she kept waking us up.

Don't expect any luxury. It is a great place if you are just going to stay there for spending the night. I would definitely recommend this as a budget place to go if your idea is to only spend the night there.

Great location - convenient (not too far from subway), safe (anywhere in Manhattan is generally safe), within walking distance to fitth avenue, central park, time square. Clean toilets and showers. They don't have lockers, but you can store your luggage with them for $1 on check-out/in. Only dislike is the frustatingly slow free wifi - it virtually doesn't work during peak hours.. minus one point for character.
