Clean, safe and friendly environment. Lacked atmopsphere when I stayed but I'm sure during the right time it would be great with a rooftop bar over looking rio.

A nice little hostel with stunning views of rio. The neighborhood is safe and the locals are helpful and friendly. It can feel a little sketchy at first but don't worry! Nice hot and powerful showers and a modern feel throughout the hostel. The only problem for me is it's too far from anything in rio and going up and down the hill everyday becomes a proper pain. Still it was the cheapest option by far during the World Cup.

I stayed here during the World Cup. I've been to Rio before but I loved staying in Vidigal. It feels like the real Rio. It was completely safe and the people seem genuinely proud of their neighbourhood and interested in travellers. The location is good enough to walk to ipanema but sometimes it was a bit of a schlep getting back from anywhere else in the city. It was a bit crowded so the cleanliness and ratio of staff to guests could be improved but I'm sure after the World Cup it will be better

The view is apectacular and I felt very safe here in the favela. My main problem with the hostel was that staff weren't very good at giving tips for things to do, or even just telling you how when you had decided what to do. The internet was also terrible which didn't help. Vidigal is awesome though and it's a great experience staying there. Maybe just split you stay up between places as it's ages away from most things.

I stayed at Varanasi as a single traveller 10 dAys before the start of the world cup, despite lots of work being done in the hostel as they were building two new bedrooms, the builders never disturbed a thing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is a bit out the way as it is half way up a mountain in a facial but security was never a concern, local shops were cheap and the view was second to none
