A nice little hostel with stunning views of rio. The neighborhood is safe and the locals are helpful and friendly. It can feel a little sketchy at first but don't worry! Nice hot and powerful showers and a modern feel throughout the hostel. The only problem for me is it's too far from anything in rio and going up and down the hill everyday becomes a proper pain. Still it was the cheapest option by far during the World Cup.

I stayed here during the World Cup. I've been to Rio before but I loved staying in Vidigal. It feels like the real Rio. It was completely safe and the people seem genuinely proud of their neighbourhood and interested in travellers. The location is good enough to walk to ipanema but sometimes it was a bit of a schlep getting back from anywhere else in the city. It was a bit crowded so the cleanliness and ratio of staff to guests could be improved but I'm sure after the World Cup it will be better

The view is apectacular and I felt very safe here in the favela. My main problem with the hostel was that staff weren't very good at giving tips for things to do, or even just telling you how when you had decided what to do. The internet was also terrible which didn't help. Vidigal is awesome though and it's a great experience staying there. Maybe just split you stay up between places as it's ages away from most things.

I stayed at Varanasi as a single traveller 10 dAys before the start of the world cup, despite lots of work being done in the hostel as they were building two new bedrooms, the builders never disturbed a thing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is a bit out the way as it is half way up a mountain in a facial but security was never a concern, local shops were cheap and the view was second to none

Positiv: -Excellent location with view of Ipanema and the bay - you will fall asleep hearing the sounds of the ocean -Good opportunity to experience favela life -The hostel is new To have in mind: - Travel costs will add another RS 12 p/d to your budget if you do not want to walk a lot - No cosy restaurants and bars around in Vidigal -The reception staff does not know anything about Rio and will provide only the most basic information -Not much interest in reacting to customer queries

Great place needs a bit of life drilled into it for its place in the favela though! Can't fault it for value though!!

The best thing and the worst thing are the same thing . Location. Half way up the side of a steep mini mountain, the view can't be beat but everything is uphill or down hill, makeing it a hard place to live, one of the reasons that it was aviable for the poor to build there. A few piles of trash in the streets, but the hostel is as clean as you could ask for and the Ac good. The 10x12 foot dimensions of the 6 bed dorm give you an idea of the space avalable. I stayed in at night and enjoyed.

Staying at Vidigal is such a nice experienc! The atmosphere in the hostel and the favela is awesome. Everybody knows each other and is a huge family. You can find everything you need in the there. And not only that it's safe to walk down and up the hill, but it's also a wonderful workout. But you can also take the mototaxi :) The hostel itself is new and clean. One of the nicest I stayed in Rio. The stuff is very welcoming and fun! And you have maybe the best view over the beaches of Rio.

It's a pitty I only stayed for two days! The view is spectacular and the structure of the hostel could not be better! Everything is new, clean and well maintained, and such a helpful and friendly staff. Feeling of total security in a pacified community, and many establishments nearby. I wouldn't recommend going walking to the beach, but instead taking a mototaxi to the foot of the hill, it is cheap and much faster. Great for those who like to party and for those who don't, since rooms are quiet.

Nice place to have a real but proper favela experience. The place is super cool, with a nice view to the best beaches in Rio. The staff is great and everything is pretty clean! I would definitely recommend this place for my friends!
