Excellent hostel. I would have stayed longer except that it was full. There was a free bbq, free beer, great people and kind staff. Thanks so much and I look forward to staying again. Oh yea and the location is the best :)

I have stayed at all the hostels in the waikiki area and by far the backpackers is my favorite. It is the cleanest and most modern hostel. Nice wood floors and new fridge and microwave in the rooms. Toilet and shower as well. The free beer and barbeque nights always make meeting new people easy. The staff is very friendly and professional.

The Hostel is located at the end of the Waikiki strip right next to Honolulu Zoo. It's a 3 minute walk to the beach and is right in between the bars and restaurants. It's an old hotel that has been renovated into a hostel so each room has an en-suite. The main caretaker Jesse was nice and very helpful. I'd definitely stay here again.

Other hostels may have been better. 50 ct towel rent, no hair-dryer, entrance is in an alley/street, no lockers. Have to pay all upfront than at the end. Received ill-fitting bed sheets that couldn't cover mattress. Sanitation's pretty dodgy. On last night, got 6 consecutive red bites on leg. I fear bedbugs. Friend hears mice scuttling at night. Cockroaches inside closet. Upside: location. Up the street's Honolulu Zoo and around the corner: beach and shopping district. Pleasant staff making do.

The bathrooms were broken for almost the entire time I was there. Although some of the staff was very courteous and friendly, most were rude, unapproachable, and not accomodating. The staff apparently overbooked some rooms, and found reasons to kick people out of the hostel instead of looking for more reasonable and fair alternatives. I would recommend Waikiki Beachside Hostel, given the friendlier staff and services available.

I liked how there were planters hanging and trees in the courtyard area, as well as the padded deck chairs/ tables outside. I felt it added to the atmosphere. The kitchen needed more dish towel for drying dishes & I would keep a container of Clorox wipes in there, as well, so as to help keep the table sanitized during/after breakfast hours. The staff made me feel comfortable & safe. Keeping a small broom/dustpan in the closets would also be helpful for keeping the floors clean of sand.

Pros: provides you with your own kitchen, fridge, microwave, and stove if you want to keep things cheap and not resort to eating out all the time. just a couple blocks from Waikiki Beach Cons: Internet is free, but unreliable and didn't reach my room so I had to be in the commons area if I wanted to Skype or use internet. the common area is pretty cramped and shaded. no airport pick-up service.

Bathroom was flooded during my entire stay and the whole dorm filled with sewage smell, the day I was checking out there was no staff there and office was closed, there was no breakfast provided and I never got my key deposit refund back as I had a plane to catch. Rooms were dirty with cockroaches and with bed bugs in most rooms, all the staff there are ever-changing because they're just backpackers working there for a free bed, so they are clueless of the location area, overall a big nightmare!
