YHA Franz Josef Reviews

I've stayed in several hostels all over new Zealand and South America and this is the best so far by a long shot. Not a party hostel but I met tons of really great people from all over. I'm a germaphobe and it was spotlessly clean. The staff was super helpful and set up tours and shuttles so I could see both glaciers in one day. Also I forgot to book my second night and they just let me book it and pay at my convenience. Overall it was so wonderful and I felt right at home.

A brilliant hostel. We had such a great stay here. The facilities are all top notch and it is so clean! Plus the sauna is great!

Good experince to stay at YHA Franz Josef.Well managed,excellent facilities,helpful stuff and nice atmosphere.

Clean bathrooms & rooms, huge kitchen, helpful front desk (which closes at 10pm though so just be aware!) and only a short walk (~5-10min) from all the restaurants and other things in FJ. Not the place to stay if you're looking for a cute, hole-in-the-wall boutique feel because it's a large hotel almost but otherwise great. We stayed here to do all the glacier activities and it was perfect. They even have a sauna for post-glacier relaxation!

Well a more or less typical YHA, which always seem pretty commercialised in my opinion. Staff was helpful enough, location just as good/bad as it can get in Franz Josef town (which only consists of 2 streets). Room was nice, kitchen ok and the sauna great :). Internet 5$/24h.

My room was musty, the attendant gave me another room ... That was also musty but I stayed in it... ...please remove the carpets, they are damp...and old and they smell.

Definetly stay here at not at the Chateau just next to it. I stayed in both, and that one is 100 times better. Rooms are a good size, although no lockers,clean, kitchen well equiped, and was cleaned several times a day, excellent staff, good common areas, good and comfi beds, eco friendly, well organized recycling. Laundry with drying room to hang your clothes.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is convenient. The kitchen is well equipped. The whole facility is in a quiet area.

Clean, well equipped and comfortablle hostel. Sauna was amazing and rooms were clean and comfortable- I had an amazing night's sleep! Only complaint I have is some guests feeling a bit too at home in the kitchen/ dining area and walking around in a towel which put me off my food slightly! A quiet, relaxed hostel in a great location.

Late checkin, nice sauna, ample bathrooms, advertised free wifi (but only YHA members only).

The staff were really helpful and nice. The layout of the building was good, facilities all worked and made for a sociable feel. The only thing wrong was there are only 2 plug sockets in the 4 bed dorms which meant only one person using an adapter could charge anything at any one time. Definitely stay here though if you are going to Franz.

We stayed at a couple of different YHA while in New Zealand and this one was at the bottom of our list in terms of satisfaction. The bathrooms were small in relation to the number of guests and they smelled like public bathrooms which was unpleasant. In fact the whole place had an unpleasant odour, including our room which we tried airing out but it didn't help much. I did appreciate that they are trying to be very environmentally friendly and the staff was nice. Ok value for your money.

Very happy, had a nice stay here. Bed and pillows extremely comfy :-))

Noisy rooms.

Really helpful and knowledgable on reception, and of course freindly! So sorry I forgot to hand my key in - I left it at YHA Nelson they said they would get it back to you :)

It could be warmer. There's a smell in the Sauna~

Nice place, would definitely recommend if you're staying in the area. Really impressed with how big the kitchen is and the amount of kitchen supplies available!

Highly recommended, it was great!
