Spacious and clean kitchen, tidy dorms and facilities. However, a receptionist who tries to sell flyer with a map on it for one dollar? This should be free of charge ... . Anyway, nice hostel with a superb view on the mountains.

Modification made to my reservation through hostelworld was not updated by the Mt Cook YHA. Thankfully there was a spare room available and was saved from a travellers nightmare. Otherwise an excellent location and a value proposition on facilities vis a vis other expensive stay options at Mt Cook.

The place is good and the staff are friendly. The kitchen is clean. The sauna room is one of the thing we loved most. The sauna room open from 1700 to 2000 daily. You may have a rest here after your whole day walk around Mt Cook. However, the price is a bit expensive in compare with our hostel which we had stayed in NZ.

As others have mentioned, the are no locks on dorm doors and the charge to use the lockers. Huge kitchen area, nicely set up for multiple people to be able to cook without running into each other. Make sure to bring the food you want with you - nowhere to buy anything in Mt Cook Village and hostel charges through the roof for everything ($9 can of Pringles?). Similar to other places, WiFi was hit and miss throughout the day, only one device at a time per the code you buy. Sauna ok, not very hot.

Hi Dima .. Thanks for your feedback. There are locks on the doors, that's the reason we give you a key ! They may not be immediately obvious as you don't need the key to lock the door, only to unlock it. I agree that the some of the shop items can be a bit expensive. We are working hard to source cheaper items for our guests ( we got rid of the Pringles in favour of ordinary potato ) Please ask if the sauna is too cold, we can always adjust the temperature ... Cheers Jason Manager

Was a great place to spend two nights. Fantastic view. Lounge area was a little cramped but kitchen was huge with lots of facilities. The place was clean and relatively tidy. The gentlemen on reception didn't really seem to know what he was doing, I did wonder whether he may have been hungover or something. But the ladies were great. Ample parking and good location. Possibly a little overpriced but with few other places to compete with to be expected. Beds were VERY squeaky!

Good hostel, everything you may except from a YHA hostel. Bit expensive though, but still the best budget option in Mt. Cook.

Perfect backpacker stay at Mount Cook and the location couldn´t be any better. Not sure there´s much else to choose from in the area but this place has a good kitchen, a comfy TV room, good staff, clean rooms and goog bathroom facilities.

Poor value for $37. Clean, ok facilities. BUT they charge extra for pretty much everything, and staff is incredibly unfriendly. First hostel I've been to in 6 weeks of travelling that didn't have safe. Lockers cost $2, single use (so every time you take out something you have to pay again) and when I said I wasn't happy about that, I was told "Isn't your laptop worth more than $2?". Manager didn't want to let me use kitchen after check-out while waiting for bus and was also unfriendly to others.

Hi Ruth ... I'd like to apologise for any percieved poor service you recieved .. Our policy is not to hold customers belongings behind reception as we believe that our customers are mature enough to take responsibility for themselves and their belongings, rather than passing that responsibilty on to hostel staff. We also feel that it is reasonable to suggest that customers ask permission to use the hostel facilities after they have checked out and not just asume that it is their right to do so. Absolutely beautiful place. The hostel has more character than most YHAs, with a lodge feel and the best kitchen I\'ve ever seen in a hostel. All of the staff were really nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend it.
