Worst service EVER! Ppl go to Oamaru is to see Penguins and the best time to see them is from 3:30pm & later. I booked well in advance & included my arrival time of 11:30am. Rooms are not always available that early but at EVERY other hostel I have been too will store bags until you room is ready. When I arrived at the YHA all the doors were wide open, no one was there and the office had a sign saying "open at 4pm". No contact #, way to contact anyone & no way for me to lock my bags so I left.

Very cute hostel and fits right in with the small town vibe of Oamaru. We had a relaxing 2 nights in a double private w/ shared bathroom. The room itself was pretty small, but opened straight into the laid back lounge, where we spent the majority of our time in the hostel. The kitchen had all the bits and bobs you need and a fridge-freezer (a rarity!) A short walk to the Countdown supermarket and main street is also a plus. The blue penguin colony evening show is a must-see too!

Nice family run place. Really friendly people. Nice to not be in a party hostel and actually be able to get some sleep!

OK hostel, nothing special. We stayed in a 5 bed dorm which was very cramped. Probably would not stay here again.

Cute, cosy hostel. Main door left unlocked during the day with no staff around which we didnt like - although dorm and private rooms have their own locks. Very clean but just one shower for the mens.
