Its a really nice hostel and very quiet so it was nice to have a bit of peace and enjoy the area. There are loads of bars and restaurants nearby but you are guaranteed a good sleep at this hostel. If i came back to the bay of islands i would come back to the YHA. Reception closes at 8pm so make sure you get internet vouchers and washing sorted before then. The staff are very friendly and always on hand to give advice.

Great hostel! Super close to beach and all staff extremely pleasant. Make sure to check out the coffee/gelato place a couple blocks away.

The beds at this place are the most comfortable you'll get in any hostel!! Bathrooms in dorms a little small. Stayed in an eight bed dorm with one other girl so not to much fighting over bathroom. However if the room had been full would have been very difficult. Also kitchen area and dining room are very small although the kitchen is well equipped. Be aware that this hostel is quiet however the one next door is not.

We stayed inside a little chalet beside the main building. Pretty comfy with the tiniest basin I have ever seen :)

Reception Desk closes at 7:30PM and I checked the other hostels...all close at or before 8PM. This is strange, since the last Naked Bus pulls into town at 7:45PM, if it is on schedule...and mine was 1/2 hour late. When I got to the reception, it was closed. Must be Salty's free dinks at 8PM. I had to ask the other guests if they had a spare bed in their dorm. Fortunately, one guest spoke up! The next day they pointed out a key box with a sign that is impossible to read at night.

Good little sociable common room and well equipped kitchen. In great position within Paihia- one block from the beach and beside the best bars. Bathroom was a bit dated but perfectly decent hostel.
