A great place, even it is a ways from the central part of the city. Very clean, great common rooms with people hanging out, good facilities, outlets on each bunk bed. Locks on doors and lockers provided. You do have to pay for WIFI if you are not a YHA member.
The hostel is located 30 minutes walk from central york. WiFi was not complimentory! 5 pounds for a day. breakfast portion is so tiny, however dinner is pretty good.
Youth hostel? Well, it's not very youth-friendly (unless you're talking about school kids...). It's very clean and tidy, but has no atmosphere, no where to socialise (very important for solo travelers like me), no kitchen to cook in, and the Wifi is not free... Oh, and the breakfast is not good value, considering I paid $10 for it. If you are a backpacker, find somewhere else to stay, and leave this one for the school trips.
Great hostel. It was a really far walk from the train station however. We eventually got used to the walk but for a city with limited public transportation it became very tiring. Great staff and facilities up to YHA standards. As with all YHA hostels, no free wifi for non members.
The bath/toilet lights seemed to be activated by a sensor, which never worked correctly. It was quite a pain when the lights suddenly went out while in the shower. Other than this, we had a pleasant stay.
Very organised and the facilities are all clean and well-kept. Spacious rooms and lounge area. good to chill and relax.
This hostel was excellent. The only downside was that the wifi did not work in our room. We had to go to the end of the hallway by the stairs or the lobby to get on the internet.
Clean and neat; a long but pleasant walk from the city centre

This was a really nice place. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the room was really nice. My friend and I paid a little extra to have breakfast which was great and worth it for the price. My only complaint is that it's really quiet far from the city center. It took us about a half hour to walk there from the train station which really isn't that bad we just didn't expect it and had a lot of things with us so it was frustrating. If you don't mind the walking though, it's worth it.
Good hostel, 15 minutes away by foot ffrom the city center (easy walk); good for people with cars (car parks are crazy expensive in the city centre and staff from the hostel let us stay in the hostel car park even though we were already check out) There's a little bar selling booze, not a crazy atmosphere but just a place to hang out with own friends; i'd recommend this hostel, good fot its price;
The review I read that best describes it is "like a university dorm". The room was clean, the bed comfortable if a bit narrow and the staff pleasant if a bit distracted. Physical location is nice and while outside the centre it is a nice walk in along the river or down a main street. A bit impersonal and not very happening if you're by yourself and would like to meet people. Would be perfect for large groups. Gerneraly enjoyable but nothing too special.
Great staff, loved the food, very tidy & well presented, it has made us want to go to other YHA hostels now.
Very good hostel - it's like a mini-community. The rooms are very clean with individual chargers per bunk (top and bottom). The bathroom is impeccably clean and well-designed. The beds are on the narrow side. The main issue I had is that YHA York is located 1.5 miles from York Station. The pavements are all old in this city and everybody sleeps early, so if you have a wheelie suitcase, it's going to rattle horribly. If you're going to walk it, Bootham has the better pavement.
The staff were very welcoming and courteous. The hostel was clean and tidy and the rooms were spacious. Breakfast was excellent and the storage facilities were appreciated. The bar was well-stocked. A pity we had to pay extra for WiFi!
The hostel's atmosphere is just not nice, they don't provide the conditions for people to interact. There's no free internet, you have to pay 7 pounds for the membership in order to get wifi access. Food there is expensive and not very good. The place is clean and all, but it's kind of far from the city, I arrived at night and it was quite difficult to find it.
A wonderful hostel. Great and friendly staff, good food available at reasonable prices, always very clean and tidy. Beds were super comfortable with individual reading lights and power points. Location is a bit of a walk (10-15 minutes from town) but it is worth it to stay at this lovely hostel. Inclusion of walking directions from station in booking would be appreciated.
It isnt't that close to the city centre, but you can go walking and it wouldn't take more then 20 minutes. The staff ia really nice and always helped us when we needed, like asking for tips to go to turistics places or asking for good pubs. The only problem that we had was that one of the showers broke and we had to use just one. And if you don't like to be in places with lots of kids, that would be a problem 'cause the place is full of families. But, in general, the place is great!
Much better than i thought. Will deffinitly be using yha in the future.
