YMCA Christchurch was in an excellent location just across from the Botanical Gardens and was a short walk to the center square of town. I took the Naked Bus from Picton and the bus dropped off almost right in front of the hostel which was extremely convenient. I was only there for a single night, but there was a bar downstairs and there seemed to be several groups of people chatting around the hostel. My room was clean and the bathroom was great. I would definitely stay here again!

Very nice and friendly staff, great first night as a backpacker to the area and NZ.

The plumbing fixtures in the bathrooms were creaky and I couldn't get hot water out of one of the third floor showers.Otherwise great!

Every time I come to CHCH, I stay in YMCA always. The triple room is as same price as a BBH but more comfortable. I like YMCA.

I stayed in this hostel for one night it was a great so one one reason is night reception kind of weird so I had a reservation for a night with share dorm and when l arrival asked him do you have a private room he said yes but he told me my reservation is share dorm can't give you private room ,please put your night reception someone nice and kind and also who can helpful even he didn't say welcome so please find someone good behave reception for night reception, kind and welcoming person

I arrived at the hostel at 2 in the morning after a long flight and even though it was advertised as 24 hour reception the guy on the front desk was not welcoming at all. Not a good start and I only stayed till 10 in the morning. The day staff were a little bit better but has more of a feel of a hotel then a hostel. Not bad location for getting into the city.

Only stayed for a night, would be great if wifi was included. Everything else was great! :) very quiet

Stayed in a single room with a shared bathroom, the bed was very uncomfortable because the mattress was hard and small. The gym was convenient but they do charge you to use it. Probably won't rush back here.

Our window was facing the bars, so it was pretty loud until 4am - bring ear plugs!

A well situated hostel, easy to access main facilities in Christchurch. Staff were friendly upon check in. Atmosphere was good - lots of travellers to mix with and share stories with. Generally seemed clean, but there were no lockers or areas to store luggage safely. Entry in to rooms is with a key, so sometimes rooms can be accidentally left open by others in the dorm. Very creaky beds that were not that comfortable. Kept awake by movement in bunk easily.

Great and easy to find location, nice and central and everything you would want to do is within walking distance! We stayed in a 10 bed female dorm and the room was massive, but hardly any showers in comparison to beds - they were always very clean though! The kitchen is tiny for such a large hostel so gets cramped very quickly! The hostel also had a hospital feel to it... Wouldn't stay more than 2 nights here.

Staff is unfriendly and gives you a hard time if you ask for some information. Beds are super uncomfortable and squeak whenever someone moves, it is impossible to sleep there.

There are no lockers at all. No poweroutlets in the bathrooms. "Fully stuffed kittchen has 1 Medium or bigger sized pott so I had to wait 45 minutes for 2 others to finish their cooking until i could have my turn. But the Worst: stuff is very unfriendly and does not seem to appreciate to work there. Instead of thinking whats possible and showing options, they give a Hard time and were not interested to help at all. Plus no free wifi?!?

Mean loved it

Good location and helpful staff, although i think they have a lot to improve about the hostel's atmosphere. Being a huge place and taking dozens of guests, it should be expected more common areas where people could meet each other or simply read a book and checking some emails (there is a small living room in each floor but needs more light, more color e and some 'human touch' to make it cousy and pleasant). Not defending a party hostel, but just improve a bit more in its character.

We have been in NZ almost a year and so far, this is the best hostel we have ever stay in. Our room was tidy, clean and the beds were awesome! I'll totally go again.

Had a great stay here in a twin private room, great location: only 10mins away from town centre and the restart mall and just opposite the gardens. The staff were super friendly from check in to check out, and the rooms were spacious with comfy beds, I especially liked the electric blanket! Nice touch guys!

The hostel is fine, nothing special. Kitchen is a bit small.

Excellent place, all was cleaned and tidy, the people is kind and helpful, I recommend this hostel

The hostel has a very small kitchen and is always very dirty. Old food and dirty dishes everywhere. The livinrooms for watching tv or reading were always full of people and late at night was very noisy because of drunk people in the aisle. The room has really noisy beds. You can not move without weaking up the person on bed under you. One of the worst hostel i have ever been
