The hostel was way (!!!) beneath expectations. The main kitchen was not operational so everyone had to use a tiny kitchen, which was filthy and had very little in the way of utensils. I think the people staying there had stolen a lot of things, and they were obviously to blame for not cleaning their dishes and leaving the kitchen in such a mess, but seeing as the main kitchen was not operational, YMCA should have employed someone to clean more than once per day! Beds were ok, staff were ok, tbf.

The women in the reception was not very friendly and couldn't answer any questions cause she was stressed. Very good that there is a gym at the hostel!

Location is good. If you stay in peace, this hostel is good for you. However the kitchen is the worst. You should give up to cook here. The kitchen is only for two people, oh my gosh... only 1 folk, 2 spoons.. And unfortunately, there is nothing to see in Christchurch because all buildings are under construnction because of the earthquake.

Staff were very helpful, only thing we noticed that could be improved is there is no signage on the toilet/showers on the floors were they are shared. Some people were walking around asking for directions and knocking on doors because it was not clear where toilets etc were located. Thank you

I had a great stay at this hostel! The only thing is that you have to pay for the internet... like almost everywhere in Aussie and New-Zealand! To sad! Because we pay for it... Nice dorms, clean, good location... !

This hostel is good as a stopover for bus journeys but that is all. The people staying and the staff are friendly but there is no character, it is in need of some interior tlc and there are not enough amenities for the amount of guests; for example one tiny, dirty kitchen, a few depressing communal areas and a few toilet/shower rooms each for 20plus guests.

The hostel was very adequate but it felt a bit sterile. The day time staff were very friendly and helpful, but the evening staff when I checked in were a bit surly. There wasn't really any introduction to the hostel - where things are, what time you need to check out etc. There is a Robert Harris coffee shop attached to the hostel which was very nice for the morning coffee. Breakfast not included.

the hostel had a weird vibe, not many commual areas for people to interact. Also there was only one small kitchen and probably 50 washrooms/toilets, didnt make sense.

A little soulless. Didn't get to spend much time there and pretty glad. Otherwise good 24 hour check in and everything required.

The rooms were more like a hotel than a hostel - we even got a balcony and the beds came with towels and soap. The whole place was really clean and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Really good hostel in Central Christchurch situated right next to the botanic gardens. Central Christchurch is pretty dead at nighttime due to the earthquake so not many restaurants / venues open late at night are around. Staff and facilities were great, although you have to pay to use the wifi (not that much, pretty cheap).

The YMCA has a great location, which is the only selling feature (that, and the free parking out the back). Staff were unnecessarily surly when they served us. The kitchen is tiny and crowded and dirty. The room was basic, but otherwise okay. Would look elsewhere for accommodation next time I'm in Christchurch.

Some staff are very friendly and helpful while some should be friendlier. However, the kitchen is the worst one I have ever seen. Dirty and too small. Five people can not fit in that kitchen. There are no knives or scissors. In my opinion, it would be appreciated if the hostel expand the kitchen. We also dont like the idea of giving the credit card to receptionists in order to take the room keys. We feel unsecured.

The kitchen is rather small for the number of guests. The refrigerators were jam packed and it appeared that a few individuals were taking up too much space by storing large bags of food.

Worst customer service of any hostel I've been to, one lady in particular was patronising and seemed like she didn't want to speak to anyone. Uncomfy beds with broken springs, so big that we barely saw anyone, rooms are overpriced and it seems that they are taking advantage of the closure of other places since the earthquake. The supermarket is a very long walk (the directions given from reception were also wrong) and despite advertising meals available we found this was no longer the case.

The single room was lovely with cabinet for your luggage and a small balcony, overlooking an old historical building and close by to the Botanical park. The kitchen, dining area - almost none and fridge too small for a so many visitors.Backpackers like to cook between 6 and 9 PM and congregate around long harvest dinner tables. This was not available here. I kept my cool bag with food at night on the balcony and ate at my tiny desk in the room. Front desk staff very helpful.
