A truly perfect location by the river, a nice and charming interior and a wonderfully helpful manager. Can recommend this to anyone wanting to see the shrines or hike in the beautiful area of Nikko.

We really enjoyed our stay. The Zen Hostel is located in a beautiful natural setting. The owner will pick you up at the train station, and drop you off in town for sightseeing. I enjoyed the chance to see the quieter side of Japan after time spent in Tokyo. If possible, in the future, I would like to be able to rent a towel, for an extra cost, so that I wouldn't have to bring one with me. I had very little space in a small backpack on my last trip. Thanx for making us feel at home!

Scout, has a great attitude towards the guests, always willing to help and thinking about your enjoyment of Nikko Breakfast was delicious Thanks to Scout we were able to have dinner at a full japanese restaurant Scout offered us an excursion to see the Kegon falls, the lakes and enjoy an onsen up in the mountains It was a great day trip There is a lack of maintenance in bathrooms, showers and the exteriors of the house The hostel has potential, he needs to keep working on its improvement!!

Owner Comment (Show)
Tiles in the the bathroom/shower area (used to be the onsen / hot-spring) fell from the ceiling during the 9.0M Great Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011. The earthquake severed a window pane and also fractured both sides of the building as the building's "centerpiece" was the natural bath/onsen area and was built and rests on the stone bedrock that is it's foundation. Essentially, the building "settled" during the massive earthquake. The missing ceiling tiles will not be replaced as that bathroom will be completely renovated in the future, so until then, the look of ceiling will be our constant reminder of the fateful day of March 11, 2011. As for outside, there are shovels, carts, pots and wheelbarrows all over the garden area as the organic garden is being tilled and seeds are being sown. This will happen every April. I understand that it was your honeymoon and you'd like everything to look perfect, but nature is unpredictable and we are far from being able to recover and renew.

It was really amazing The hostel itself is what was a Japanese spa, it gives a nice view over the river when taking a shower. The common room are in traditional Japanese style (low tables, tatami flooring) although there is also a couch if you prefer not to sit on the ground. Breakfast is included, Scout is a great cook and makes a large variety of different foods. Even with a busstation next to the hostel Scout drives you to the touristarea in the morning and picks up at station in the evening.

Scout is so accommodating and will help you to plan your trip perfectly. Even though the hostel is a bit outside the main city of Nikko, it's no problem because he picks you up with the hostel van. It's nice to be a bit out of the way and enjoy the nature around. Scout also makes the best breakfasts in the world! I can't wait to go back!
